That is the alignment pin for the oil pump. It goes in one of the holes that a bolt does not IIRC. Just push it back into its home on the engine side.

Yep, very obvious that first gear dogs have been skipping over the tabs.

Check the tech tip, it gives the Dremel numbers for the bits to get. But I will list them hear for you.

8193 is the large stone for both working on the dogs of second gear and also for the dogs of 1st gear.

For the slots of 1st gear, use Dremmel #455 which are actually chain saw sharpening stones.

I used two of each to grind the gears.

            Hey Charles,

Don missed one, the small round orange stone for grinding the 5th/2nd gear slots. #932. Are you planning on doing the dremelling, or are you going to let me do it? For the amount of wear on yours, I would use the cutoff discs for being able to remove the quantity of material needed to get to a sharp flat edge, then the large round stone to smooth it out. I have also been thinking about trying to use the cutoff disc for the 4th/1st gear landing slots first as well, then the small chain saw grinding stones.

I would much rather have you do it. With your experience and as bad as mine are i think that it would be the best choice. I know everyone has stuff to do so when you get them im not in a rush.

I will go out and look for some after work Wednesday. Guess Ill hit hit up lowes or walmart. If i cant find them I will order them from amazon or something.

im also going to need some help with placing the shift forks. One of them has a wear mark and would like you to look at it. Do you think I should get a replacement oil pump?

JAT, how do you feel your 850 stacks up to your 1100? I had a XS750 Special back in 1979 and it was a great bike! good power, shifted great and road great, as well as great gas milage, what are your thoughts?

                    Hey Charles,

Okay, sounds like a plan, I think I've found them at Walmart, but for sure at LOWES/Home Depot.

Lon, I got your PM, but I have backslid....no exercising this winter!

Lon, Charles had the bad tranny problem when he got the bike, hasn't had a chance to ride it yet to be able to compare, so once "we" get his transmission back in order, and get his carbs tuned in, then he'll be able to give you a better comparison. He's owned a KZ1000, so I would think he will be biased towards the XS11 once it's running right!

I had a 850 triple while in Japan, loved the feel, engine vibration, had plenty of power, but the XS11 is still much stronger. When I first got to ride my 11 when it arrived back in the states, I thought it was TOO SMOOTH, I felt like I was riding a highpowered sewing machine...I actually didn't like the feel since I had ridden the 850 for 1.5 years prior to it. But once I got it broken in, it's power grew on me!

well the 850 doesn't have the power of the 1100 but has more then the 750. its basically a refined 750. Although Ive been told that the 750 would out run it. Idk. I like the 850 but with the bigger rim and tire from the 79 750 i have on the bike it sits a little high in the rear and I need to change the handle bars from stock to something more like the superbike bars. I used the wheels from the 750 cause it had brand new tires on it. lol. I just dont like the buck horn bars. The 850 is a lot lighter then the tank called and 1100 but still could use a little work on the handling.

I also have a 79 750 special that will be the next project after the 1100.

I had this bike but in even better shape and it black when I was in high school. It was a great bike! My inexperience and the brakes messing up caused it to send me to the ER. I didnt ride for ten years after that. My supervisor was transferring to japan and sold me a kz1000 in boxs and I had the bug again. lol.

I wanted another 850 ever since the last one then the 750 came up so I got it and about a week later the 850 showed up on CL and I had a little extra $ so I had to get it.

When I had my first 850 my brother in law had an 80 xs1100. He was the reason I traded me 1990 xt600 to an old man for the 850. I rode his bike once when he was trying to sell it and it was way too much power for me!!!

I twisted the throttle and it was like i was riding a rocket and it was way too heavy for me. I was only 165lb then.

                          Thanks

Thanks T.C., I didn't know the history I have had both, the 750 and now the 1100, I love them both I have to say though, the XS750 Special was a perfect balance of weight, power and handleing. I was so disapointed that I couldn't afforad the XS1100 Special when I went to the dealer back in 1979 and I ended up with the 750. Looking back, it was one of the finest bikes I ever road It shifted so smooth and pulled pretty hard, cornered great, it was an all around a great bike. The 1100 is great also but the extra weight is clear, yep, it jumps when I say jump and pulls like a bull with its balls on fire. Love them both, just two different rides

                              Hey Charles,

It's your bike, so you can make it how you want it, but those cutoff pipes are going to be horrible for both performance and tuning nightmare.

You've got almost pristine stock pipes which give the most all around performance that most folks will use....lots of low end grunt and decent midrange, not as strong at the top end, but most folks rarely take it that high that often.

Nothing much going on as far as progress. Life happens and now i dont have quite as much spare time on my hands but this evening I went to the garage and cussed at this upside down bike. Im kinda tired of seeing it like this and after not being able to find the grinding stones to fix the transmission I decided that I had to do something to it tonight. So I pulled out the side covers from the saddle bags and went to clean them up. The first cover cleaned up way better then I expected and the second looks a lot better then it started. Im starting to think that the drab green idea may not have been such a good idea. lol.
                                Heres the pics.

The second pic is what the second cover looked like when it was done. I wish I would have got a before pic of the first cover but the second one was in much worse shape.
