glad to see you were able to get as far as you did. were the bolts as tough as some of the ones that you encountered while i was over? i want to come over to see what you got now that its opened up, to see what you might need, since i have the extra tranny now. i will do my best to help you so that you can get this thing back on the road before the weather warms up so we can go for a ride.
thanks, sounds good. A little more tinkering on the 850 and I will be riding it till the 11 is up and going.

Yes, you do work fast!! I sent you a recent PM reply. I have some of the special/rare sized tools you may not have, like the 27mm socket for the clutch nut, as well as calipers for checking the clutch plates and springs, torx bits, etc. and can bring them by.
BTW, did you ever check the VIN# to verify that it's the 81 Venturer, but several on here have pretty much confirmed that it is. IF that's the case, if you created your username for the year of the bike, I can change it to reflect the 81 status....but it might also be your birth year, not sure!?

Hey Charles, I've got a few parts I can offer up too.
If you plan on going without the fairing, I've got the standard front turn signal lights and stalks. (hard to find mounting brakets too)
I can pull the headlight ears off my G, but I can't help you with the bucket. I have been keeping my eyes open on ebay for an inexpensive one though.
Maybe next weekend I can get a chance to swing by and introduce myself face to face.
I helped John with his bike some and I'm willing to offer up any help I can with your build as well.
I do see that you're familar with the XS's (750 & 850) so, you're probably pretty mechanincaly inclined, so I might not have much to offer in the way of help, but at least a sounding board to bounce ideas off of.
I work up in Newport News at the shipyard and live down in Va Bch, so I've got to deal with that stinking tunnel everyday.
Later,

Yeah that would be great if you could bring those tools by. Im not really sure what I have as far as socket size. I know i dont have the calipers. I never did check the vin but it seems everyone knows what it is. Yeah the date was my birth year. lol.
@ GLoweVA:
Sure you could swing by any time Im there. Just shoot me a text or call to let me know your coming by. ill be around after work on wednesday and thursday then sould be near by on saterday and sunday. I also work in the shipyard in N.N. Im on the TR.
I wasnt planning on using an of the touring stuff besides the mounting brackets for the bags. I would appreciate what ever you could offer. i have some headlight stuff off the 750. I have a bucket. the trim ring is a little beat but it would work. Im just not sure that the 750 stuff will fit.
Yeah Ive got the other bikes but mechanicaly inclined I doubt some times. lol. There is always someone that knows more then me. I really dont know too much about these thing. Kind of a fly by the seat of my pants kinda guy. lol.
@ Nightengale:
After you left there was a guy that that came by on a punched out 76 kz900. He said he lived in the area and had heard a nice sounding bike (yours) in the area and was out looking for it. I recognized him from a time that I saw him on an oldschool cb750 outside farm fresh. Then the guy mentiond an old guy in the area that had a nice flamed kz1000 that he really liked. I told him Im glad he like my bike but I dont apreciate being called old. lol.

it probably wouldnt hurt to do the other gears as well while you have it out so as not to have to do this again anytime soon
As many have said, the case hardening on these gears is a pretty thin layer and I wouldn't do any Dremmel work to a gear that doesn't need it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The problem with 2nd gear is that it doesn't engage very deeply. By doing the washer swap on 2nd, you nearly double the gear's engagement. If it wasn't skipping and you do the washer swap, I doubt it ever will, no matter how hard you thrash on it. If you have seen these gears AFTER you do Dremmel work to them and put several thousand miles on, you can see that the gears are considerably softer and have kind of squashed together in place where the dogs contact the slots. That's why it's not so critical to be absolutely EXACT on getting all the dogs to mesh at the same time, though that's what you want to shoot for when grinding.
Just my 2 cents.
Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

And.... If you've no plans to use that fairing, I'm sure there will be many people willing to take it off your hands.

Could you please post pictures of the worn gears after you get it/them out?
I'm kind of curious about how bad the dogs are.
