  • Hello Everyone! A New Guys First Post

Hello everyone. Just want to introduce myself. Im in Hampton Va. and just picked up a pretty 1980 xs1100 standard. The bike needs some love but for $400. I dont think I did too bad.

The bike has new tires, carb boots, brakes, brake lines, carb rebuild kits but the carbs werent put together so i did that and with no real tuning the engine started right up. As soon as I put it in first and let out on the clutch out I found out why it was cheap. lol. clunk clunk clunk!!!!

Well now Im here hoping for help and info on saving this old tank.

I think I will also make a post to track the progress of this project.

I dont have any pics of the bike right now but here is what it looks like, except the mufflers are different and mine is missing the luggage rack. My saddle bags and trunk are rough so the tey will probably come off. My fairing is in great shape but the lower extensions have been taken off. I have them but not sure if they are going to go back on.

Hope to hear from you guys.

Welcome aboard you came to the right site all here are willing to help. The important thing is to ask questions and explain what you do or don't understand before you start on projects. The clunk may not be as bad as you think. The first thing is get a manual or a copy so you have a reference. I know there are some places to get downloads free referenced here on the site. There is a lot of information here about clutch and transmission and several fixes. I would start with looking at the clutch. If it has set for some time it may be sticking. Start with the cable make sure it moves freely and then go threw the adjustment first. The internal mechanics of the clutch can develop rust which can cause bind and slip and make you think its comming apart.

To put your pictures up you need to load them into an online site. Photobucket is free and what many here use. From facebook you can insert a link for us to go to but photobucket works easily.

    Welcome aboard.

That is an '81 Ventured model. The rarest and most sought after of the models. It is the only one that came crime the factory with the tour setup. Very nice!

Thats not mine its the closest pic on the net i could get. Mine is titled as an 80 and has different stock mufflers. Once i figure out posting pics i will put some of mine up.

To post photos I go to the image on photobucket and copy the web address and then click the insert image button and pase in the address and it doesnt work.

            Hi CP,
Re-reading your first post I see that your bike is "like" the picture you have posted. 1981 XS1100 H Venturer is certainly what is in the picture.
There are subtle differences and a 1980 could be made to look like that.
It is important for ongoing advice that you determine exactly what you have.
Even a so called Frankenbike can be made to run with the knowhow available on this site.
            Phil

Can someone post the link to Vin # for CP ?

Welcome to the site, and the madness of XS11 ownership!!!

What you describe is one of the most common reasons these bikes got sidelined. It sounds like the gears are skipping under any kind of power. It typically hits 2nd gear, but 1st gear is not uncommon either. Does it feel almost like your sitting on a machine gun? Basically there are three "dogs" on the drive gears that fit into slots on the mating gear in the transmission. The ends get rounded over and instead of latching and driving the gear, they slip and then clunk into the next slot, and slip and clunk into the next slot.

There is an excellent guide here on the sight for fixing the issue HERE. It does require a bit of work, however with the guidance of the folks on the site and this guide anyone with the interest and some mechanical aptitude can certainly accomplish the project.

Looking forward to pics of your bike!!

                      Hey there Charles,

I sent you a final reply to your registration email. I was hoping you would have replied earlier so that we could have gotten your location/address. I work in Hampton, John/Nightengale lives in Hampton...he says he sent you a PM. I will be making a stop by his place sometime next week to look at his extra set of eBay gears he got, we'll be doing the 2nd/1st gear dremel fix to his bike in the near future once the weather gets warmer. I've done several gearsets repairs over the years, so we should have no problem getting your machine in tip top shape to fly down the road without a skip!

I was afraid that we might have scared you off with our enthusiasm of wanting to meet up with you!? But hopefully you've seen from what you have read on this site, that we just "love" these old machines and are very willing to help other's "afflicted" with the "madness" to get their machines going to be able to keep as many of these on the road!

Hope you'll PM me and John with your address/ph# so we can arrange a time for a short meet and greet and perhaps discuss a gameplan for your repairs.
