finally warmed up enough here in Iowa (47F) to get out to the shed to pull the steering bearings and greased them, looks like first time from new (33 years?) bearings were in good shape but a little dry, rear swing arm next hopefully re-packing and re-setting bearings to torque specs will help with the old girls wallow thru the corners proclivities

Don't we get any pics of the dry, crusty bearings? We love our XS porn.
Regular care of those neck and swinger bearings is soooo often overlooked. Good on ya for takin' the time to get in there and smoosh a lil' grease around. Hope ya took the extra time to set yer fallaway and change the fork oil.
Look at the swinger bearing race carefully on disassembly. If there are lines on the race where the bearings were, you may need new races. Once ya get that back to spec you can start thinkin' about new shocks...

Could be just me, but, for the price of them, If i'd taken the time to strip it down, I would put new bearings in the steering head as a matter of course.1980 SG. (Sold - waiting on replacement)
