    front fork fun

finally warmed up enough here in Iowa (47F) to get out to the shed to pull the steering bearings and greased them, looks like first time from new (33 years?) bearings were in good shape but a little dry, rear swing arm next hopefully re-packing and re-setting bearings to torque specs will help with the old girls wallow thru the corners proclivities
where are we going, and why are we in this hand basket?

Don't we get any pics of the dry, crusty bearings? We love our XS porn.

Regular care of those neck and swinger bearings is soooo often overlooked. Good on ya for takin' the time to get in there and smoosh a lil' grease around. Hope ya took the extra time to set yer fallaway and change the fork oil.

Look at the swinger bearing race carefully on disassembly. If there are lines on the race where the bearings were, you may need new races. Once ya get that back to spec you can start thinkin' about new shocks...

Could be just me, but, for the price of them, If i'd taken the time to strip it down, I would put new bearings in the steering head as a matter of course.

That's what I did. In hindsight I don't think I'd do that again. There were insufficient cutouts in the neck of my SG to knock the lower race out. Removing it was a chore, as was removing the inner race from the stem. Other than being dry, the upper bearing was probably OK and it was far worse than the lower one. Some cleanup and new grease would probably have done me just fine.

Be aware of the typo in the Clymer manual about the torque adjustment on the swing arm bearing caps. I think it is off by a factor of 10!

Right you are, Skids. I confess to having fallen for that one myself. After I corrected it and RETAPPED the threads in the frame ARGH...I quickly threw my Clymer's in the trash.

took a bit to figure this out LOL but yes did that different terminology I guess, did fork seals and the oil last year along with the brakes tear down and rebuild, so they will just have to tough it out a while with what they got then

You'll be fine. Fork oil is good for quite a while under normal riding conditions. Still wishin' for pics of them crusty bearings...

well I could take it back apart and check whether I used strawberry jam or red axle grease ? for lubrication nah be easier to just taste what's in that little tub that says bearing grease on it, but you shouldn't believe everything you read I've heard, investigation in order me'thinks
