  • leaking gas tank

Has anyone had a problem with the rear tank mount leaking? Last year i had the same leak. I used POR-15 on it, and took a lot of time to make sure everything was done right according to the directions. Even let it set two more days than i was supposed to, just to make sure it was cured. It did seal it, but now it is back, and worse. They said i now need to boil the tank to get rid of their product and redo it. I will have to weld completely around the rear mount, filling all the holes in the mount i guess. Anyone have a good solution? I reall don't want to have to paint my tank yet.

Nope. That is an odd place to have a leak.

      Red coat

You can have it dipper and redcoated inside at a radiator and fuel tank shop, it will kill the paint job and that will need red-one.

I'm pretty sure Cobia had the same problem with his G, he used some kind of tank liner IIRC. His was leaking in an area by the tank mount that was inaccessible to braze/solder.

About a 150 buck fix in my part of the world but the acid dip and re-coat with the red liner worked well on two of my tanks.

I am a little afraid to trust the liner alone. That is what we did last summer. Need to close the leak with weld first, then seal. The tanking is just to get the old sealer out.

I just finished putting a Caswell liner in my tank. It's now curing. I hope it works.

Here's the chronicle of removing the old liner and rust, WITHOUT damaging the paint.

                Red Coat-liner VS Red Kote

The process I was talking about at the radiator / tank shop is a permant fix. I used it on a BADLY rusted KZ tank. It involves a chem. strip that will kill the paint and then the red coat -liner (not "Red Kote") is a solid at roon temp, so it is heated / melted "very hot" and poored into the tank. When it cools, it becomes a THICK solid again forever (unless you bike catches on fire and burns at 1000 deg)

It cost about 50 bucks back when I had it done, and any paint remainimg must be removed and tank recon / repaint is needed. But from me at the time, and after failed attemps to seal that tank, it was worth it, it never even thought about leaking again Clearly, not for minor easy fix, or great paint job tanks. My tank was black, so some 2k fuel res. rattel cans, wet sand and buff, gold 3M pinstripe and it looked better then new

Did you look on E Bay about a tank? I see them come up from time to time or contact Andreas Weiss-a member on this board.

Do look carefully on the Standard tanks, sometimes the leak is fuel draining out the drain tube for water that gets caught in the filler cap indent. DBeardslee has that happen to him. The tube rotted out inside the tank.

Had it welded all around the rear mount.
