  • Which side for petcocks?

Rebuilding petcocks on my project 80G. All the parts went into the cleaner from both petcocks. I didn't note which petcock body is for which side (left/right) of the tank, or which lever goes with the correct body.

I think with the lever in the down position, the curved cutout in the back of the lever piece will expose the side and bottom hole in the petcock body. Correct? If so, then I'm just needin' some guidance on the petcock body.

I notice the fuel screen tower is offset toward one end of each petcock. Maybe that is the key to knowing which petcock goes on which side, like the petcock goes in the hole so the tower is closer to the front or back of the tank.

I swear I did a search, and found nada, otherwise I would not be bothering you gents on this fine night.

On the Special model petcocks, they have an L and an R stamped into the bodies, and the levers.

On the SG I recently aquired, I found they were assembled incorrectly, the left side lever in the right side body. Which made ON actually PRIME. I was with the PO on a long ride when he ran the tank dry in the ON position, no reserve. Don't do that. If we had not been together he would have had a LONG fricken walk!

      Hi Howard,
While |I do not have the whole answer. When installed the lever
      Points Down for Run
Points Forward for Reserve ( to go forward in search of gas station
      Points Back for Prime
Prime position Opens the diapraghm mechanically while the other positions rely on Vacuum.
Hope that helps you to figure out how to re assemble

On both of my standard petcocks they are marked L and R on the back of the body. Might check to see if you can find that. If not then I'll take a look at mine to see what goes where.

The bodies are not marked L/R, however one back cover is marked "R" (covers were removed for cleaning and rebuild), but I need to know which petcock body is right and which is left as the cover will fit either side.

The only markings on the petcock bodies are "Mic" on one side as you look at it longways, and "japan" opposite it on the other side as you look at it longways.

If someone can look at their 80G (or similar) petcock bodies and tell me how the markings are oriented with the petcocks on the bike that will be the ticket.

            Thanks guys!

Thanks much, I will be able to use the levers to find the correct alignment with the holes in the petcock body, thus identifying the bodies. 'preciate it.

That, by golly, is the holy grail of petcock identification, especially the last few with the parts laid out.

I vote to put that as a sticky in the tech tips.

                    Thank you so much!

His paint looks like what I have on my 80G, "new ruby red" as Yamaha called it. It's not as common as the silver/grey on most 80G's.

Thanks for the help with the Petcocks. Got them done in a short time tonight, ready to go back on the tank.

I used some of the info from the Yamaha vacuum petcock rebuid tutorial, the link is posted in at least one thread in the forum. The main thing the tutorial convinced me to do was polish the critical surfaces of the diaphragm seat and the housing the lever turns in. Plus it has good overall knowledge.
