    Fluk

Could of been a fluk, but I bought one for 100+ bucks batt's and accadently left me bike in park with the tail light on. When I tried to recharge my high dollar batt, it was dead and no hope to fix, so I bought a cheap Walmart for 50 bucks and working fine ever since

+1.......wet cell lead acid batteries do NOT like to be shelved. They like to be 'used', and battery tenders WILL cut overall life of battery by more than half. Both my ST and XS having digital clocks, and I attribute both bike batteries long life to this, battery being used, even though it is minimal amp draw. Replaced the Interstate battery on the XS last year as it was 7+yrs. old. Still load tested within specs., but with the sulfation over that many years, a cell shorting wouldn't happen unless I was a long way from nowhere. The Exide on the ST is now 7 1/2yrs. old, and after sitting a couple months, started bike up and rode it some today. Starting, could tell battery was down a bit, but system will rectify that. Both those batteries have seen a charger only once, since charging them when new. I see way to many members only getting a couple yrs. use out of their batteries, and I have to wonder why.

I am using an automotive regulator with radio shack bridge rectifiers on my XJ after looking at the 650 forum. I have yet to consider what it would take to do this on an XS, though. I plan to do this to the 78 when I get to the wiring. I will try to get out and pull the parts and take some pictures, but have not been motivated enough lately with the cold weather.

Starting at post #3, the discussion starts about my Reg/Rectifier setup:

            http://www.xs11.com/forum/showpost.p...66&postcount=3

At this point, I have the rectifiers wired differently on recommendation from a friend who knows much more about this than I.

I'm using a different regulator from O'Reilly Auto Parts, with an unpainted enclosure (first one from NAPA didn't work, or I fried it). The rectifiers are now epoxied to the inside of an aluminum enclosure instead of bolted to a heatsink. And, like I mentioned earlier, the rectifiers are wired up differently now.

You know, you can use the rectifier within the OEM unit if only your VR is bad, and just use an "external VR." You don't need the bridge rectifier unless it tests as bad. You need an excited field volt regulator.
