  • Ebay carb ads

Keep seeing carb ads on eBay and just want to be sure I understand.

    Take this ad:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1978-1981-YA...E:B:SS:US:1123

Looks to me like a set that will fit a 78-79 but not the 80/81.

Too few orifices on the intake side.
Anticipates a choke lever on the handlebars.

Is there anyway that these models will fit an 80/81?

    Thanks,

Yep, a set of '78-79 carbs. These will work fine on the '80-81 bikes, you'll just need to drill the hose nipples on the factory airbox for the bowl vents.

Don't forget that jetting follows the carb, not the bike....

      That

Is a good price, I'd still clean them though before I mounted them.

Sorry, HamJam, I meant that the 80/81 carbs anticipate/use a bar mounted choke lever.

The 80/81 carb also have the choke lever on the left side of the carb bank.
I believe the 82 XJ carbs are cable operated and have a handlebar lever, but I'm not sure on that.

That is correct...the XJ has a choke cable mounted on the left handlebar. There have been threads in the past about converting back and forth between lever and cable operation; it is not that big a deal if I recall correctly but have never done it myself.

It's not a BIG deal, but there is some monkey-motion involved. If installing earlier carbs on an XJ, you can just leave the XS linkage in place and remove the cable/lever. If you want to retain the lever, you need to swap the XJ choke linkage onto the XS carbs.

Going the other way is a bit more difficult. To install the XS linkage onto the XJ carbs, you need the complete XS linkage (including the two detent balls/springs), and need to drill the holes in the 1 and 4 carb bodies for the detents as well as tap existing holes in body 1 for the lever assembly. There's a few variations on this (you can sometimes do without the detent on the 4 carb, and some have threaded the end of the choke shaft for a knob), but it's not a straight bolt-on.

If you lack the XS linkage, installing the XJ cable/lever or something more generic is possible but some minor mods/fab work will be needed...
