HBonser is going to try JB Weld on a float bowl repair, which is a bit more extreme than just a diaphram chamber repair.
I'm sure he will let us know the results, unlike people who start threads, and then abandon them when they get to cookin'.

Yeah, um... I am using JB Weld, right CZ?
Is it correct to say the JB will be to hold the threaded sleeve in the float bowl that will subsequently have a new bowl drain screw, where the p.o. had put a glob of JB to fill the drain screw hole that was stripped?
Yeah, that's what I'm doing...Howard

You may have saved some carbs from the junk pile. If you put that bowl on #1 or 4, you could check it every few months, without taking the tank off, or the carbs out.

My humor is of the construction site type, which is not appreciated by a lot of folks unfamiliar with it. (And some that are).
But I would be interested in how it works, so tie a string around your finger and have at it.
Ooop's there I go again.

CZ thanks for the props! I do surprise myself with the, um... ingenuity... Hey, at least I know when to ask for help, so I'll let you know when I need some.

I tried a float post repair with 2 part JB and the fuel turned it to mush. If it were my dilemma- I would sand the outside and inside surfaces with 80 grit then clean with laquer thinner. My suggestion involves 2 different repair products. Id place the piece in position and use this on the inside only:
The JB Id use on the outside only. I believe gas vapors will break down JB. There is still the problem of the JB cracking when its cured and the top is tightened down, soooo I would apply the seal all to the inside nice and wide going beyond the crack. Then install the diaphram and tighten all four lid screws. LASTLY apply the JB to the outside. At least now the cold weld compound stands a chance. With the screws tightened the repair is pre stressed and the JB is shielded from fuel vapors. Thats just my 2 cents.Comment

Progress!!!
So I thought I'd give everybody a little progress update. I'd mentioned that I found a set of carbs (albeit completely dismantled) on eBay for $40, and figured I could at least use the parts to work on mine. Well here's what I got.
So today was my first day off in a while, so I really started to sort through everything I had and organize it into various baggies and Tupperware containers, and as I was doing so realized that the pieces were very nearly a complete carb bank (save for some screws) and they're in waaaay better shape than what I had already, so I was like, "we'll crap, I'll just put these together. I am very pleased to report that after a few hours of studying my carbs and repair manuals, I now have these!
More to come soon I'm sure. I'm still going to dismantle them again and clean and rebuild them right, but I'd say I got a pretty good deal at $40, especially considering that three of the diaphragms were in great shape. Thanks to all of you who post on this site and keep noobs like me from feeling too overwhelmed!81 XS11Comment
