  • Urgent question about rear hub. I think. Maybe.

This is the right side of the rear axle on my XJ. Should there be a pin or bolt through those two holes to lock it? Been riding without. Have I been risking my health and welfare unnecessarily? Thanks experts!!

Nope. No pin in those holes. The pinch bolt that you show is all that is there.

Not positive about this, but I always thought those holes in the axle were to insert a phillips screwdriver through to help pull the axle out when removing. At least that is what I always used them for. Most bikes have them, never saw a bolt in one.

...to also hold the axle from turning whilst torqueing the axle nut to 108 ft. lbs. BEFORE torqueing the pinch bolt to 14.5 ft. lbs.

There is a tool in the tool kit that came with the bike if you have it to be used for same.

I always make sure that the pinch bolt is at least snugged, but not tight, when torquing the axle nut. The axle head can spread the flanges if you don't...

...of the axle/bolt is and should be approx. 25mm to 26mm in diameter and a straight consistent cylindrical shape that fits into the swing arm just as a piston in the cylinder bore.

IF your axle/bolt is spreading the split swing arm then the axle/bolt is probably damaged.

The axle/bolt gets torqued first, with all model respective bearings, bushings and washers in the right places, as the final drive aligns the rear wheel.

Then the pinch bolt gets torqued to basically hold the axle/bolt from spinning under load.

I think I found my problem! The spacer is probably wrong with the G Model. I will post a new thread.
