    Not always, sometimes it can be just staining in the cast iron, cast iron is porous and can stain but leave the top surface smooth so still perfectly use-able, I've used many bores showing this staining without any issues.

        Crack is no crack. Simply a water stain. Honing made it like new. Whew.

          Crack?

          I agree. Verify that it is a crack or not. A crack in a cylinder is usually vertical. Unlike the one shown in your pictures. Quite likely, as stated, this may be a mark from a ring. Worth a trip to a machine shop to verify.

            Another Thought

            One other thing. Can you feel it with your finger nail? May try a few passes with a cylinder hone to see if it tries to go away.
