  • Engine Rebuild: Valvetrain Components Available?

I think I've decided to let the XS11 special I've been looking at (earlier thread) go. I would snatch it up if I had the cash, but to get the cash I'd have to sell some things quick. It's too much hassle right now.

If for some strange reason the bike is still around for awhile I may think again.

For now, I'd like to know what top-end parts are still available and for how much.

I know the big bore kits are still around here and there.

Suppose I wanted to buy 4 intake and 4 exhaust valves tomorrow. Is there someone that for sure has them and how much? How about valve guides and how much? Are valve shims still available and how much? Finally, can one still buy a cam chain and how much?

    Thanks,
    Ben

I am looking at dennis kirk book as i type. They list intke valves only for the xs-1100 at $14.99 each. They do list xj-1100 intake and exhaust valves at $14.99 and $20.99 respectively.

Guides and chain are still available too. For shims, you might be better to find an 'old bike friendly' shop that will let you swap shims. Most mechanics will have a good handful of these in their toolbox and be willing to swap one for one for a few bucks per shim. Sometimes the trick is getting past the guy at the parts counter who believes in the "no customers in the shop due to insurance regulations' nonsense.

So do the valves for the XJ fit the XS too?

          Hey there Ben,

You may not even need to replace any valves or guides. You will want to replace the valve seals, they were a bit over $8.00 ea at Yamaha, might find cheaper at other places, Partsnmore, Zanottis, etc.. The valves were also available from Yam, around $35.00 each!!!! When you pull the head off, you may be able to get by with just regrinding the valves and seats as per recommended by an Ex-Yam Mech, or you can do it even cheaper by just Lapping them yourself provided the valves and seats aren't too pitted.

With the shims, you'll want to record the value for each one and it's location, then after the rebuild, remeasure the clearance, then you'll be able to calculate what sizes you'll need for each valve, and you may be able to switch shims from one valve to another to fit your needs, then just replace/exchange the ones that won't fit/work that are left over! The Shim were also about $8.00 ea at Yam, these prices were as a couple of years ago, YMMV!!!!! Yes, save your money and invest it in the big bore kit and rebuild, will be better than just getting another USED bike!!!

The special I'm passing up is a good bike. It's just the wrong time.

My bike looks great but runs like a 750. Now I've verified that. That's okay too, I've already heard stories of what the XS should be like. Now it's time to go and get it.

I got a set of valve stem seals for a good deal and have just kept them for when I do the job. Perhaps this summer will be a good time. As much as I hate not riding in the summer, I hate wrenching in the winter that much more! Plus I have a dual-sport and two other dirtbikes to keep me going when the XS is down.

So can I use XJ exhaust valves in my '80g XS standard?

            Thanks for the help guys.

There are some microfiches around, check the part numbers. They usually don't change them if its the same part. I got 1 intake and 1 ex. valve from my yammie dealer. Valve seals too, valve guides were obtainible, but too expencive for me then. They are OK anyway.

I don't have XJ and XS fiches around. Does anyone have any they could check the part numbers for me?

Have checked the XJ and '80 Special, valve components carry the same part numbers. I put a copy of the valve train .pdf file at:

                    http://sopris.net/~fieldsj/e-mail/la10.pdf

You might take a look to get part numbers. This is the LG ('80 Special) .pdf, but is the same for the XJ. Should be the same for the '80 Std (G version) as well.

I just called Dennis Kirk. The rep told me they only had air filters for the XS11. What's up with that.... Chevy45412001, do you have a catalog page number and item number for those valves?

Not exactly on topic, but can someone explain the parts numbering?

On the Yamaha parts fiche web site, my 78 intake valves are listed as IJ7-12111-01-00
                          80G intakes 3H5-12111-01-00
                          81SF intakes 3H5-12111-01-00
                          83XV920 intakes 2J2-12111-01-00

                          are these the same valves?

Yes, Marty, they are the same valves. Yamaha does the same thing with most of their parts numbering, that is how you can cross-reference other bike's parts. Sometimes when a part is no longer available, I search the year and model close to mine, like a 78 750 and usually I find a match. The prefix three numbers are the model. ie: 2H7 = 79 XS1100 standard.
