Looking for a replacement exhaust, maybe someone might be able to recommend something other than a Mac. I have had them on my 1000LTD and though they were OK, they did seem to weather faster than some others I have had in the past. Thanks for any suggestions. Jon

If you have good downpipes (Headers) and the collector boxes are good, you can use Harley mufflers and a short piece of pipe on each side. The Roadking muffs are pretty quiet, and look nice. Most Harley riders take them off and put on much louder pipes, and the originals can be had rather cheap. I have them on my 79F, and they work and look great.put something smooooth betwen your legs, XS eleven

If you're looking for a new bolt-on replacement, the MAC is your only choice. There is also the Campbell X-Pipe ($800), but you'll have to move/remove the stock side and center stands, so it's not a bolt-on. Otherwise, you'll be looking for good used....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

What Steve said, except that I'll add that there's no MAC any more either. Once the current stock is depleted there may be nothing.
I've never actually seen one, but I found this Marshall Deeptone on the net:

Thanks for the replies
I did see Cobia's pipes. Left a post and PM but haven't heard back, may have sold them by now. If anybody has personal contact with him, let him know I may be interested. Again, thanks for the responses, I guess it will Mac now or wait until next spring and see if something else better turns up. Jon1979 XS1100 Special

LiteFiter, good luck with finding a replacement exhaust. I never did find one last year. MAC was out of stock then and had no interest in supplying more. Marshall Deep Tones are produced overseas and the company at that time wasn't interested in helping out.
However, I did find a solution I like. My bike-in-a-box came with a set of MAC 4-2 headers and those long ugly torpedo mufflers. The mufflers were rusted and dented pieces of junk and one of the header tubes had a chipped out manifold flange.
I salvaged the headers by repairing the manifold flange. I then discovered SuperTrapp has car mufflers in about every size you can imagine. I looked around online and ordered a set of brushed stainless steel mufflers that slipped on the MAC headers. To my surprise, the SuperTrapp muffler mounts bolted perfectly to the OEM muffler mounts
These mufflers are completely tunable. The sound is a smooth pleasingly muffled tone that growls under hard throttle and rumbles on deceleration.
My heros have always been flat trackers.

Great Look!
Mashermoto, that sounds like a great option. Love the look. I really like the one you purchased, any chance you remember the model number or name that you chose? I maybe able to try something like that with my current pipes. My problem is I have an almost perfect left side original exhaust minus some surface rust, but the right muffler has a large flat spot where at some point, the bike must have been laid over. Works great, just looks like crap. Does anybody know if the outer diameter of the original head pipes is equal to the Mac 4-2? Can you even remove the original mufflers off of the head pipes (new to this bike, haven't had it long enough to see what can and can't be done yet)? If it is not the same OD, could it be sleeved if the bike pipe OD is smaller?, Thanks, Jon1979 XS1100 Special

As to your existing system, if the muffler is not creased to badly, have you considered trying one of the glue type dent pullers? May be able to get it looking better. Otherwise, you could consider filling it in and painting the mufflers.
The factory exhaust system has the outside headers welded to the collector, and the mufflers welded to the collectors. You can carefully cut just behind the weld and remove the muffler, leaving the internal pipe attached. More than a few folks have bought mufflers only from aftermarket sources, including all but new Harley mufflers for cheap and slipped them on the stock collectors.
Your other option is to ride it as is for now and keep your eye on ebay and such for a good condition right side. Even if the right side headers are crap, if the muffler is good, you shoudl be able to get a good welder to cut both off and put the good one on your collector.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I've never saw the mufflers welded on. The stock mufflers are held on to the collectors with a clamp. The two most outer header pipes weld to the collectors and the two inner header pipes are clamped to the collectors under the bike. The mufflers also have the cross over tube that clamp together in the center behind the center stand."The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.
