  • slipping out of first

i have had my bike slip out of first then back into gear when i let off the throttle. this has only happened a few times and only when i really take off quick. when i ride normal there is no problem what so ever, it shifts through all gears just fine. is this the clutch or do i need to do the dremel gear fix. also i just adjusted my clutch, before this strarted to happen.

Unfortunately the gear dogs are worn and need repair. I went through the same thing when I recently repaired a second gear problem.

I repaired the second gear on a secondary shaft from another engine and didn't look close enough at the first gear dogs.

Got practice 2 weekends in a row pulling the tranny apart. Fix 2nd gear too while you rin there and check the others thoroughly.

Yep, the symptoms sound just liek the ole' gear slipping problem. Dremel is your friend...Really!

Definitely dremel 2nd and 5th while your in there. It is very uncommon for the rest of the gears to be effected, but look any way, You would hate to find out you missed one after you get it all put together!

I did too... TWICE! Started out with 3rd gear, so I fixed that. Then it started in 2nd, so I fixed that. Then 5th gear went. So I did ALL of them. No problems since then.

I've seen the fix thread and got a feeling ones in my future and not looking forward to it. Time wise if you stayed on it how much time is involved for a novice?

Depends on how determined you are. I can do it, start to finish, in 4 hours. Took me 6 hours the first time. Allow a full Saturday afternoon at least.

                Interesting transmission explanation

I found this helpful in understanding what's happening in the transmission.

Personally, I am abit OCD about doing such projects, known to skip meals and sleep maybe 5-6 hours till they get done. My first one took a while, and I needed some breaks, to go to work and let it sit till I calmed down. IT is not an easy task to get it reassembled. Not really tricky or requiring special knowledge or tools, it just requires you hold your mouth and tongue just right for that countershaft to slide into place. I had it apart in about 4-5 hours. I spent easily two hours dremmeling the gears. Then hours and hours over a three day period till I coaxed that countershaft back in.

If all the stars align and the shaft goes back in, for a first timer doing it, I would allow all of a Satruday and half a Sunday to button up all the case covers and such. Heck, I spent 3-4 hours just scraping the bloody gasket material off the shift side cover, it is a PITA to get to tucked in behind the timing cover and the middle drive and frame and such.

                    gears

Found a set of gears on eBay for under 100 bucks, I'm thinking about getting them, and making sure there right, so that I can take out the old gears and put these in place, and keep the olld set as a spare. I figured this might save me some time

Don't just slip them in there, go ahead and rework the dogs and slots. Also, do the washer swap on 2nd gear.

You really don't want to do it twice.

You might want to shoot a message to out local parts guy Andreashweiss to see what he can do on price of a transmission...
