  • Rear shocks

The information I am looking for was on the Yamaha site till last year on the parts fiche for the 1980 G model. At one time I had captured them but no longer have the CD I saved them on. There was a technical reference sheet about the upgrade of the shock springs when installing saddle bags and fairing. There were actually about 8 sheets dealling with shocks emmisions carbs electronics etc. These sheets actually showed the procedure for dissasembly of the rear shocks and repacment of a heavier spring. It also showed the picture of the tool used to compress the spring.

If anyone knows where I can reference this info about the shocks or has it in electronic picture form I would appreciate it.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

I have used a winch strap to compress the shock spring on the monoshock for my dualsport bike, and it would be about 4 times the strength of the ones on these bikes

If you compress the spring and take the keeper out of the top of the spring cap, the whole shebang comes apart....

You need something like the yellow one of these....
          http://www.progressivesuspension.com/tools/index.html
... This compresses the spring away from the top eye, then you can remove the slotted washer that holds the shock together. The hydraulic parts doesn't come apart.

I have the tool Crazy Steve pointed out. It works just fine on the stock shocks. It works even better on Progressive shocks. I found the tool for cheap on Amazon.
