  • Pacifico Fairing Installation

I'm finally getting around to installing the Pacifico fairing on the 78E. PO had removed the fairing and luggage and now that the bike is running properly I'd like to have legal headlight and turn signals. Also need it ready for the SE Rally.

The mounting brackets that attach to the bikes frame are OK and are secure. However, I don't have any piece for the TOP side front mount. (see picture)

What is the correct piece that attaches "over" the top of this forward bracket that carries the weight of the fairing??

The upper support is a bit "sprung" to the left, maybe 1/4" or so but that will not be an issue after the fairing is in place and the upper and lower left side brackets are bolted together. I see a radiator clamp in this next pic but that can't be OEM or adequate to hold up a 35 lb fairing + road bumps and down force from the windscreen at 80mph into a headwind.

The pictures in the downloaded version of the Pacifico installation manual are too blacked out to view and I don't see a parts list. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Jeff

Don't under estimate the power of hose clamps.
It looks as though there is a tube coming down to meet the hoop tube about where the fairing suspension is. (I like the rubber shock mount, by the way),
With the half saddle on the fairing meeting the top half saddle, and a couple of hose clamps on each side, you should be good to go. You will have to fish the inner two through the saddle, or just make do with the outer two. Make sure you get clamps made in the USA, as I've seen some of the foreign made ones that were pretty flimsy
If that still bothers you, you can find some U-bolts, and use them.

Yeah, the hose clamps are really what holds the front part to the fairing. Remember that the rear area is supported by the flat, lower frame, bolted the the bike's frame down-tubes. That is where most of the weight is supported.

THANKS for the sanity check / logic check!!
I just didn't want to install the fairing improperly because at speed, the fairing does create a lot of buffeting forces that will stress the attach points.

As you suggested; I will get USA clamps and get proper Bolts / Washers / Stop Nuts / Rubber support strips so I end up with a properly installed fairing. (just hope the electrics work but I don't expect any problems with that).

My luck would be rolling down the interstate and have the fairing rip my head off or wad up around the front wheel. It's always best we check when it is something we don't know for sure. thanks!

WTF Is that piece?! My Pacifico does not have that thing in the fairing itself. It has the upper and lower mount but bot that other thing on the fairing. There aren't even marks there saying it hd been there...

What I'm curious about is what is the top end of that brace tube fastened to at the frame? A clamp around the headstock?
A picture would sure clear up a lot of questions. Hint, hint. CZ

              Nate and CZ,
That IS the OEM Yamaha/Pacifico mount for the 1978 fairing. The top hoop bolts to the head-stock with 2 8mm bolts, and as stated the bottom mount takes most of the weight. the front part keep the fairing from moving too much on the bumps. It works well, and mounts a fairing that IMHO is MUCH BETTER than the Vetter.

Yeah I know that is the OEM Pacifico mount, I just have never seen that little part that is on the fairing itself. It is not on my Pacifico fairing and it does not look like it has ever been on mine.

OK, here are a couple more pics. So, fairing has six attach points.
I just don't want to crack the fairing or have it fall off due to an improper install. BTW, thanks for the help.

This bottom brace is held up on the head bracket with two clamps!

Here is the position of the clamps holding up the front of the fairing!

Here is the side bracket that supports the fairing. Bottom has rubber cushion but the upper bracket member just bolts down on the fairing with no rubber cushion??

If this is good them I'll remove the gas tank and give it a whirl. Pretty simple setup for all the aerodynamic down forces, vibration and bump forces.

                      Thanks for the pics.
The bottom mounts look like a better arrangement than the Vetter mount. The forces are spread out along the rail, rather than being localized around the bolt holes, which leads to cracking.

I just used some wide weather stripping on the top and sandwiched the fairing inbetween . Also once you have the mount on you just slide the fairing on

My 78E was a project bike. Actually it turned out to be 'quite' a project. To be somewhat legal I needed a "temporary headlight" while I test rode the bike. Thankfully PO had removed the Fairing and Luggage to scrape paint. Wierd since brakes were rusted solid, rotors dragging on calipers, 3 quarts of gas in the oil etc. etc. At least PO didn't mess with Carbs or Calipers or Masters or Valves since that repair attempt would have ruined the bike.

Bike now rockets in the twisties! 37mpg. Traxxion Dynamics suspension. Looks ugly but I'm into performance over looks. Bike seems 100% stock which is great.

Georgia law requires a headlight. I've ridden 1,000 miles with the cheap Seal Low Beam lamp wrapped with wire. Wire was just to hold the hot headlight and then hold zip ties from the wire mesh to the frame. Bogus solution, but real cheap. Did its temporary job though. Officers in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee just wave. However, I doubt if CHP would be amused.

                          GA Law says HEADLIGHT:

Looks good to me. The Vetter fairing is held on entirely by 4 #10 bolts into a lower support. At least that one has an upper mount that holds onto the front. As was mentioned, no need to remove the tank to put the fairing on. Once the brackets are there, the fairing just slides in.
