Wow.Iphone doesn't do that scoot justice. I just got home and looked at it on my computer. That bike is amazing.
I saw this other one on Craigslist the other day.At first I thought yours might be that one. Sorry about that.Yours is original and way cooler. That other one has Harley fenders and a custom paint job.

oh well, what the heck. i don't get many chances to show off some of the bikes i've brought back to life from their graves. here's some pics of some of my former bikes, all restored to like new. some i did for myself, a few of them i did specifically for buyers who wanted something special and the bikes were restored for them ]to their specs. but all were great fun to bring back to life and get back on the road again after many, many years of neglect.

You guys who live out in the desert get some nicely preserved bikes. Unlike us coastal residents who fight the effects of salt air all the time. I'm on my second handlebars in three years.

                Hi Mark,
pretty bike, the photo almost inspired me to go wash the oil, bugs and crud off the Pumpkin.
Nice color, BSA did the Gold Flash in similar paint.
Don't sweat the pinstriping, you can't see it when you are riding.
Keep the gaiters, like you say, they protect against stone damage.
If it were mine I'd swap out the bars for lower ones, switch the tank for one from a Standard and add a TKAT fork brace.

You know for cost of having shop sand and shoot, you can buy another tank and sidecovers and sell those intact for $3-350.
Offsets the cost of parts and paint and preserves another nice paintjob.

                    hey fred

yeah, but the paint kinda makes the bike look like an '87 buick park avenue
and as for the bars, i've only put about 100 miles on the bike since i got it, all short rides, so i'll reserve judgement on them for a few more miles to see how i do with them. otherwise i really like riding this thing. being a v-twin guy for a long time i'm still in awe of the xs1100's POWER and smoothness. it's just like, oh i don't know, a buick?

and as for mr. jwhughes3, that sir is an excellent idea i hadn't thought of. i much prefer the standard tank and i think i'll pursue that idea. since my tank and side covers are like new i'll bet somebody would like to trade me for their standard parts. are the tank and sidecovers (std>special)a "bolt on" swap?
                      thanks

I somehow misunderstood this post and thought it was a an xs650...and then I thought its a bit brutish to be a 650...LOL DOH...so if you're not happy with the pinstriping change it if you're gonna keep it.
BTW you do most excellent work...takes some real talent to take those skills and make something ugly beautiful again...kudos...

                          Hi Mark,
I don't understand the color reference, my Buick ('93 Le Sabre) is white with blue pinstripes.
When I bought it my sons said:-
                          "You bought a grandpa car."
                          then the eldest said:-
                          "Can I borrow it?"
And what's wrong with having the same paint job as BSA's mighty Gold Flash, I'd like to know?
About the tank; any Standard tank is a mechanical drop-on.
You gotta crop ~1/2" off the front of the Special seat pan or it won't fit any more.
The Special's thermistor fuel sender bolts into the Standard's sender hole but because the Standard's sender hole is on the other side of the tank tunnel (Why, O Lord, why?) it has to go in with the wires pointing forward or it'll be upside down and not work right.
That is, the red light will still come on but only when there's just a mile of the reserve gas left.
You will also be able to ditch the accursed octopus valve and it's rats nest of fuel tubing as the Standard's gas taps work just like the XS650's.
The side covers are model and year specific so watch what you swap for.
Also watch for a replacement left-side cover's hold-down tab being bust off because the dreaded PO didn't realize it had to be unlocked with the ignition key.

thanks. and believe me some of those bikes i restored were BUTT UGLY when i got them. the '79 standard xs650 had been laying in a guys back lot here in phoenix for 15 years. buried in the mud, and had a large shrub growing through it. we had to dig it out all the others were upright but just as filthy. but it's great fun to resurrect them and get them back on the road. sadly, some of them were ultimately neglected by their new owners after me and returned to being junk but that's their issue not mine. they all paid good money for the bikes when i sold them in pristine condition but just because some guys can afford one doesn't mean they appreciate a nice bike. oh well.

Did you do the work yourself? I'm not a pinstripe person either, but I like to see different styles and schemes. I like that clean and pretty, especially knowing what that clean and pretty can do.

i didn't do the paint work on the xs1100, but i painted the other bikes. and i did it with spray cans. if you take your time you can get very good results with rattle cans. the little black cafe racer xs650 even won a trophy at one of our local bike shows.
