Hey guys I was on vacation for 10 days now I m back, while I was gone I ve put new spark plug wires fuel lines and filters also jet the carbs. I also went threw all my electrical wires and they are all in good condition. So here I am all this done and I m still having the same issues any temperature higher then mid 20 s and it back fires and shuts down then a bunch of smoke comes out of the air box, 10 min later hit start and it fires up. I m so frustrated. What do you guys think that the regulator might be the problem when it heats up, on a good note while I was on vacation I picked up a 1983 xj and ran it for 2 and a half hours in the much warmer weather in southern Ontario at 35 - 40 degrees it was a great ride also confirming that my 81 shouldn't have a problem in the heat
    Thanks again

How exactly did you "adjust" them..? The only thing to adjust is the idle mix screw otherwise you would have to put in different sized jets to "adjust" them...

I think you need you be a little more detailed with your description in order for us to help...

When does it backfire... under load during decel, any time its running or just on a cold engine..?

When it backfires and dies what rpm does this happen? Is your idle at 1000-1200?

Have you pulled your plugs and checked color?

Your not giving us a lot to work with...

Hey X-man, I rebuilt the carbs for Dan two years ago. They were tuned properly. I rode that bike on the Island just after I installed the carbs. It was a sweet ride very fast and great gas mileage too.I believe that Dan was getting 80km more to the tank after I installed the rebuilt carbs.

Idon't think you will have to messed around too much with those carbs ,check the float heights maybe but it was running good last time I was there . I would say it's those green coils Dan installed on the bike last year. They tend to cause trouble when they heat up sometimes . I have had a few pairs now that acted up .
Dan has removed all the connectors and went with solid connections too so maybe something there might need a good looking "at" .
His bike also took a hit from a power surge when he had a trickle charger on it and burned out his field coil. I replaced that also.
You're lucky I would have bought that bike if I had know it was for sale .

Hey tinman I like the bike when it runs, it runs great. The bike idle s I think a bit high around 1500. When I said I adjusted the carbs it was just the mixture screws I went one full turn, On a cold or cool day bike runs fast and great warm weather and it stalls and back fires as for the rpm it does at a variety of rpm s and different gears you can generally feel it in the bike when it s gonna stall and I can feel the heat threw the seat.

                    Check Ebay,

Search " dyna dc1 coil " , several for ~$125.00 a pair. They will NOT come with the plug wires. You can use the wires/caps you have, but you have to get the special metal portions that fit/crimp onto the wire end so that they can slide/plug INTO the coil towers!

Hey guys I wanted to run some more past ya s, the coils in the bike are new dyna coils I believe last season ( I m waiting on an email from Dan to confirm). I also I have continued riding the bike while waiting on a set, yesterday I took an after noon ride to pay a little more attention to when it shuts down it does seem to do it a little more under load but will shut down regardless I dumped half a bottle of water on the engine when it shut off and it started right away, it normally takes about 10 minutes to start again, I drove until it sut down again this time no water it took about 10 minutes to start, so I continued on my and when it sut down I dumped water again and it fired right up I did this two more times and with the same result, the water wasnt cold it was sitting in my bag all day and probaly isn't the smartest thing but hoping it shines some light

Which begs the question, Where on the engine did you pour the water?
Have you checked valve clearances? Particularly intake valves?

Hey guys been super busy at work lots of OT so I haven't had much time to check my bike is still having the same problems, but I have new info about the coils.....
Hey Wayne: With those awesome big power coils all your plugs need a larger
gap of .35 intead of the .30 or .32 that is stated in the manual. Those
coils put out way more zap & the extra gap is needed for all to run good.
Since you have changed out the plugs, gap them out to the .35 I should of
told you that b4 but just thought of it now, use the standard NGK plug that
                              states in manual *- Dan
