  • High speed crap out

On a ride last week my Xs11 died for not reason... or I thought. Turned out that the recitfier went bad. The shop put in a new rectifer but now I have a differant problem.... At low speed the bike runs fine. Even winding it up tight, but when I get on the highway and punch it the moter sees to loose all power. basically it's running only on a couple of cylenderes. When I lket off the throttle a little it some times backfires. I live in southern Utah and it's hot but I don't think its a vapor lock issue. I was wondering if it could be a coil? Help please.

Sounds suspiciously like you have a bad pickupcoil wire. Under the left engine cover.

Thanks guys. I pulled on the wires of the pick up coil and there was no differance. It runs fine at our normal highway speed ... 55 - 60 mph. It's when I get it on the freeway where I need to punch it up to 75 - 80 mph. It will all of a sudden backfire if I let off on it even a little, then it acts like I fuel starved or something. Thought maybe even maybe the coils.

Might have a blocked gas tank cap vent... But usually the bike will die because it becomes vapor locked. You can check it by riding it with the cap open, go give it a wack on the freeway and see if it happens again. Otherwise the symptoms fit for broken puck-up wires...

Did you try flexing the wires under the cover while the bike was at idle?

As BA80 stated, you STILL have a bad pick-up wire under that left cover. Can't just pull on them quickly and call it good to go, have to use both hands so u can pull in inch incriments to see if plastic sheaving stretches like gum to find a break.
