  • High idle on choke

82 XJ1100 revs high (3000-4000 rpm) when started on choke. I find this troubling as I really don't like to run a cold engine at these rpms. Is there an adjustment that can help this problem?

Do you have to use the choke to start it?

If it runs that high on full choke, like Davinci said, start is with half choke. If even half causes that problem, then I am interested in how it runs on no choke when it is warmed up, a little rich?

I find using the half choke for a few minutes works best, just a minute or two.
They seem a little cold blooded. Within a half a block I turn it off and it idles nice for me.

My Full Choke use to rev to 4000... it would start about 2500, then after about 30 seconds would climb to 4000. After I synced and tuned the carbs this went away. now full choke is about 2500 half choke is about 2000. My carbs weren't badly out of syn but air fuel mixture was way off on 2 of them... JAT

My 80SG will work itself up to around 3-4 after about 4-5 minutes, if left unchecked.

Since I switched to 87 octane for the last 2 tanks, it seems like warmed up idle is 1500RPM. Isn't that a little high? My last tank did give me 43MPG too!

Yeah, a little high. Idle should be just a hair over 1000 rpms or your gears are going to feel it when you shift from neutral to first.
