  • ZEP Rust Calcium Stain remover

I had put off for a while cleaning my tank as it was just surface rust not large pits. I thought I'd see just how well ZEP works and it works great. After sealling off all holes I poured 1 small container (its less than a quart) in and wisked it arround all over the tank. I then poured about 3 gallons of water in put the plug in and let sit over night and the next day was pleased to see bright shinny metal where the chemical had set. Next night flipped it and same procedure and now entire tank is bright and clean.

Tank cleaning for less than $6.00 from LOWES, no damage to paint on outside or anything. However I was careful and had no spills.

So if you have been putting it off in fear, don't its easy.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

    Rust Remover

Sounds like a good fix. How did you get all the water out afterwards?

After I rinsed several times I blew it out and put a old can of dry gas which is basically alcohol opened all holes drained and hit it with compressor and set it in sun. It was 101 today so after about 30 minutes it was dry. Did not see any flash rust but leaving over night checking tomorrow. If I see any I'll probably do a quick rinse with Phosphoric acid to get a coating on it. I had washed once several years ago with phosphoric but it did not clean as well as I wanted. The diluted ZEP appears to have cleaned it much better.

        Rusty Tanks

I have previously used coatings for gas tanks where you slosh it around coating the interior surface. Let it dry and you are good to go. Works good for rust or porosity or for preventing corrosion characteristics of certain fuels.

When I use aluminum tanks in race cars running methanol, the tanks have to have this coating to prevent the reaction from the fuel to the aluminum.
