found this E-clip on my shed floor this morning, anyone recognize where it might from? quarter sized , looks like it would be external, (bike hasn't been apart) since FD change

That clip is non-OEM, IMO. It looks like an after-market clip and I've not seen one of that design ever on an original XS1100. I don't think that design of clip was even available in the late 1970's actually. It's external, by the looks of the surface. The wear on the left side looks as if there's not been much lubrication on it.

If it is indeed off your bike, as opposed to being a clip that was just lying around on the floor, then I wonder if it's from the rear brake pivot... you know, the round bar which projects from the frame onto which goes the rear brake lever. The bar has a groove in the end for a clip to go on to......

On my floor, I found four of those clips, three bolts, two stainless washers and a rubber O ring....... none of them from my bike!!!

If it is quarter sized then I can't remember anywhere that there is one that large. There are some much smaller ones used in the early carbs but that is more like pencil eraser sized.

been digging thru the parts pdf. all afternoon and didn't see any thing like it, must be a flier from some where else thought maybe off the shift shaft but not the same setup as the xs650, oh well I'll figure out where it goes when something falls off (just hoping it's not me)
