I would rather fix what I have but I was told that if my rings are messed up then the only option I have is a new motor or big bore kit. I want to do whatever to get this bike going. I looked at that motor frame on eBay but it seems like that motor is dead too. If I could get this bike to run for 1000 miles then die I would be so happy.

Yes, they run sleeves but they're not replaceable (well, not easily). You bore the OEM cylinders out for the oversize pistons...

You can get rings and replace those if need be.

If you have compression, I think you are over reacting.

Here's one $150 in Rochester NY... not too far..
Air cooled engines do not rot from the inside when the sit arround for years like water cooled does.

Shop around, I got mine off ebay for $99 with about $50 more for shipping, and that was about 30,000 miles ago.

Unless the cylinder bores are badly scored or worn they can be honed and the rings replaced, lots of guys on here have done so with very good success.

You won't know until you pull it apart and look.
If it's just a piston and rings, you can easily do that yourself. (easier with 2 people)
I did! Heck I've got 3 used pistons ready to ship your way if need be.
Original bore sized ring sets show up on ebay quite frequently.
Get a honing stone and clean out that cylinder and go for it.

Any used engine you get is a gamble. You're gonna have to go thru it and make sure everything else works too.

Its not really the prefeered method but say for instance you have the original standard piston and the cylinder is worn or slightly damaged. You can get the next size larger rings and hone the cylinder to fit that ring and use the original piston. They make 3 standard overbore ringsets for the 1100 This is somewhat a shade tree approach but I have seen it work well on bikes that as far as I know are still running.

It depends on what you want to spend a set of rings for a piston and a head gasket might be found cheaper on ebay than taking the chance on an engine you buy.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Have the valve clearances been checked? And adjusted if needed? If the answer is no, do that before changing motors. I've personally seen compression numbers come up by 100 to 200% with just that...

If your rings were truely that bad, you'd have a oil-burner. If you're seeing large amounts of blue smoke out the exhaust, then you may need a rebuild or new motor. If not, it's the valves and try an adjust before doing anything else.

Heck, if his compression number(s) are low, he could have a bent valve(s).
On my SG #3 exhaust was bent and the compression was about nil.
When I took the head off, you could see light thru the exhuast port.
I just got done putting in a new valve ($28) and viola! good to go.

I guess he won't know how bad it is until he pulls it apart to see.

You may not have to replace all of them, just the ones that need it.
Get a manual, it has the specs in it for clearances and such.
I've got 3 used pistons I'd be willing to donate to you.
I've also got my old piston rings too, but I'm not sure if you can/should use them.

I'll keep tabs on your rebuild thread and offer up any advice I can.
Last summer I replaced my #3 piston in my G by myself in one weekend.
You may take longer, but don't give up.
