  • Need a engine!!!

I haven't posted here in a while but I have tried everything with my xs. A mechanic told me that I have a dead cylinder and stuck piston rings. I tried mmo and sea foam and from trying to run it a handful of times I have lost all power it's almost compleatly dead. I need a new motor if anyone has any ideas let me know. Not having this bike run is making me sick. I live in western mass.

i had similar problems and found your thread. the info help me. I remember your compression values seemed very low. the book says min128 psi max 156 psi. with less than 10 percent diff is good. trickle charge the battery over night. try another compression check. if its low you have valve, ring or gasket problems. id try the sea foam MMO thing one more time.

I found a '78 engine for my '80G and it has worked out well.
If you do go the "find an engine" route, here are some suggestions:

This link lets you search all of Craigs list nationwide... put in XS11, stand back and be amazed.
      http://www.onecraigs.com/craigslist-...ecraigs.com%2F

Also, I ended up getting an entire parts bike and have found many of the other parts very useful. I was able to sell and trade some of the parts and have lots of spares in stock.. Spent about $250 - worth every penny and I still have my old engine and accessories...

And don't worry about needing to travel out of state - we made an adventure holiday out of it!

Here we are packed up and headin' home!

      Good Luck!

        Hey Dredel,

I reread your first thread, sorry to see/hear that the MMO and running the bike didn't free up the rings?? Have you repeated the COMP test to verify that they are still terribly low?

A used engine will probably be the easier route, and may also be the cheaper route, but may be a crap shoot. However, with the engine dying, sounds like the PO may have really flogged the heck out of it, so doing a TOPEND rebuild may not work out too well, the bottom end may not be in good condition to withstand the new stresses of good rings and such.

There was a recent post about a big bore kit from Japan for only $150.00 or so, much less than the $400-500 that Wiseco gets for theirs...but would still require tearing it down, getting it BORED, putting it all together, etc.!

Hope you find a good donor engine nearby and cheap!!

              wow

and here I sit in South dakota with a pick up truck full of XS11 parts that I literally can't GIVE away. Some time this week I'll be haul it it all to the recycling plant. I'm tired of tripping over it all. Once I get the new sidecar tug I'll have a spare running engine to move along, but the hang up seems to be my location here in South Dakota. No one wants to come get anything on the prairie.

I'm not trying to be a wise guy but you report that the mechanic is telling you about your motor but now you are looking for a big bore kit. I think the big bore kit has the potential to be more than a handful if you aren't familiar with tearing these motors down and repairing them. If you are willing to go that far why not repair what you have? If I'm not mistaken there have been threads about different pistons that can/can't be run in the kit etc. Maybe a used running motor from someone here or on ebay with very high feedback? Or maybe just pull the piston and replace the rings? Again not trying to stick my nose out there but have seen similar things in the antique tractor world and they usually end up a year or two later as an assortment parts for sale that resemble an entire bike/tractor.
