  • Stock looking mirror options?

So, I'm surfing thru MikesXS and see these:

    http://www.mikesxs.net/product/16-4651.html
Not bad for $16 for the pair!

On my G, the back side of the mirror is old, brittle, faded and sunbeaten to death.
I've already lost 2 inserts (the glass/mirror part) and have since replaced both mirrors with used ones that I'm sure, with age, will again fail me.
(And add another 7 years bad luck for breaking another mirror)

So I pose this question to you, the owners of multiple bikes of various Yamaha breeds:
Will the mirrors off a 650 fit on an 1100?
I suppose the limiting factor would be the thread size, not so much the length and size of the mirror shaft and face.

I'm considering blowing the $16 just to see if they'll fit or not. If they don't, maybe I can get them to take a return.
MikeXS also has some stock looking black ones, but they are $20 for the pair and I'd think the 'chrome' ones might hold up to the elements/sun a little better.

I know there may be other ways to go, but for my bike, I'd like to keep it close to stock looking as possible. I'm definitely not going for the total restore look! I just want to keep is true to the era from which it hails.
Maybe that's why I've got the WJ2 and Shoei bags on it instead of something newer and nicer. (and more expensive)

All Yamaha street bikes of the era used the same mirror mounting threads, so they will fit. I can move mirrors back and forth between my XS11 and my XS400 at will, as the mounting is the same on both, and the 650 shares the same mounting as both the 1100 and 400 as even the control pod for both can be swapped over with no more than some plug changes in most cases.

The only thing I've noticed that's 'wrong' with the aftermarket mirrors is the stem length is the same on both. The OEM units had a shorter stem on the right side to account for the master cylinder (or was it longer on the left side? Depends on how you look at it..). Other than that, they'll interchange as Cy says...

The thing I always wonder about is why Yamaha put round mirrors on the square-themed standards, and square mirrors on the round-themed Specials...

Yeah Steve, that did strike me as a little strange too.

Looks like I'm gonna try it. Seems like another interchangability thread is coming soon.

I'm gonna go ahead and get the clutch and brake lever boots as well. Mikes is the cheapest I've seen them ($6.50 ea)

I'm using square chrome Harley 'long stem' mirrors on my modder '78. Not a bolt on, I had to shorten the right side stem, rethread the holes in the Yamaha controls and build adaptors/hardware for the mirrors to screw into. But I'll have square mirrors...

I wonder why they didn't make the stems longer as I can get a good look at my shoulders while riding but don't get a very good look at the traffic behind me unless I lean a bit. I am buying the long stem round style mirrors right now for the SG and will see how they work out. Hopefully i can see whats goin on behind me once and for all.

Yet again Steve opens my eyes and I learn something new!
I've ridden my bike 5 days a week 48 weeks a year for the last 4 years and just today I notice that the right mirror is indeed shorter than the left.
Why, I have no idea, but I now know why my left mirror hits the windshield at full travel while the right one doesn't.

I think you'll find them cheap in more ways than one. My personal experience with Mike's rubber crap has been disappointing.

You can buy OEM for the same price and they'll probably last another thirty years. Have a look at #8 and #11.

I have a couple sets of mirrors that came off of parts bikes that are rectangular but the mirror height itself is adjustable on the stem.

I might have a set of round ones too George, I'll take a look tomorrow. Don't know if they are OEM or not. They'll probably need cleaning up if I do have them.

I have the convex teardrop XV mirrors on my SG. I compensated for the hight difference with a 1" vibration damper from JCWhitney. The damper was usless so I dug out the rubber and filled the cavity with epoxy. Works perfectly for 2 or 3 years now.

                      Hi George,
any XS650 mirror will fit on an XS11 so yeah, they'll fit OK.
What might not be to your liking is those are "European" mirrors.
If that means the mirrors are flat you won't get the "objects are closer than they appear" thing but you will have a real narrow field of view.
BTW, MikesXS has all manner of different mirrors to choose from.
Including the mirrors with flashing Vee LEDs built into them.
But if you are chary of springing for the $20 mirrors the flashy Vee $48 set are not for you, eh?

I've tried to buy original "Looking" replacement mirrors also and found every one I've tried to be MUCH lighter in weight and nowhere near as solidly built as OEM, which lets them vibrate enough to where they're useless at highway speeds.

I'm sure there's some good solid aftermarket mirrors out there, but I sure haven't found any that look OEM and are well built.

On my '81, it's got these teardrop mirrors which actually help get out past my arms better than the round mirrors. They are a really nice heavy, solid built mirror with thick chrome. BUT.. it doesn't look like they have any in right now for Yamaha.

                          http://www.jcwhitney.com/tear-drop-s...rid=c14469u0j3

Yamahas uses that reverse thread on the left handlebar and is the oddball from other manufacturers, even though it makes sense why they did it. The wind tries to tighten the Yamaha mirrors while other makes it's trying to loosen it. They make an adapter that screws in there so that you can then use any of the other mirrors, but it will make that mirror 1/2 to 3/4" taller.

One suggestion I would give about mirrors. Look for metal rather than plastic. It will stand up to things better and as Tod said the weight will help dampen vibration.

If you have a '79 or '80 Special, the OEM mirrors are available for $70 a pair. When I looked up the SH, what's available is "BACK MIRROR ASSEMBLY", also nearly $70. Who knows what that means?

OEM mirrors for the standards are NLA.
