    Valve Shim Size Increments

Long story short, I'm doing my valves and went to the dealer to see if they had shims to swap and all they had was in increments of 0.05 mm. Are there shims available in increments of 0.01? I'm looking to swap 5 shims if anyone has stock in them. I will post sizes later. Thanks!

Nope, the .05mm size jump is what's out there. A few oddball shims have been reported on ('mid' sizes like a 280.5) but nobody has found a source...

The Ford 29mm shims use a 4 digit numbering system that is pretty much the same as ours (just one more decimal place) and there are more in between sizes for those shims. Harder to find and more expensive though too.

Ford has discontinued those... the SHO guys are now getting their shims the same places we are..

They weren't cheap when they were available either...

That sucks... you can never really set the same clearance on every valve then...

So heres what Im dealing with... the following is all in metric.
              Valve#
              Current shim
              Actual Clearance
              New Shim
              Final Clearance

              I1, I2, I3, I4
              2.65, 2.70, 2.65, 2.70
              0.1, 0.12, 0.12, 0.10
              2.60, 2.65, 2.60, 2.65
              0.15, 0.17, 0.17, 0.15

I pretty much have my mind made up about these clearances, its the exhaust clearances Im not so sure about... should I run them on the low side or go big..? How much of a difference would does it make in power / torque..? Or, is it more about time between next adjustment?

              E1, E2, E3, E4
              2.85, 2.85, 2.85, 2.90
              0.16, 0.16, 0.19, 0.16
              2.80, 2.80, 2.80, 2.85
              0.21, 0.21, 0.24, 0.21

Or run them with one size smaller shim and get...

              0.26, 0.26, 0.24, 0.26

              Thoughts and reasoning for choice?

I try to miss on the loose side, might be a tad noisier but no worries for a while. I doubt you could tell any difference in power if set tighter, IDK.

Thanks Phil, Im looking for someone who wants to swap shims... Im looking for 2- 2.60, 2- 2.75, and 1- 2.80. Im going to revisit the dealer this morning and see if they have what I need. I may just end up buying new ones so I can get on with the adjustment.

BTW, the manual says to toss the used shims.
