  • 1st post 350.00 xs1100 E

here we go. Just bought this xs1100 E for three hundo. It currently runs, but the front breaks are seized, the petcocks are wrecked and it pours oil from what i think is the master cylinder. So i've been doing a lot of manual reading and lurking around here but not so much wrenching. JB welded the swiss cheese tank and diagnosed a couple of really sore spots. you guys are great by the way. very helpful, informative and welcoming. i'm very excited to tear into this project.

I currently own a cb550 and it's a lot of fun around the city but not at all girlfriend or highway friendly. i want to make this a big, comfortable low gas tourer for me and the lady. i'm talking chicago to birmingham... at least. so on deck for modifications are ss brake lines, tkat fork brace, 750 final drive, acct, and i know some aluminum machinist wizards so i'm curious about that fork/front break mod. low on funds but long on time, i'm thinking next season i'll be riding something.

sorry about the couple of shakey pics

nice find for relatively cheap money ...That seat is a Russel Day Long and that alone new can be as much $650 or more depending upon options.,,, in used but good condition would sell for abt $300. From the looks of it both pilot and pillion sections were done thus this seat was at the more expensive end of the price range... RDL saddles are highly regarded amongst those who want to ride the best seat for long distances comfortably... Good luck with getting it roadworthy...

First, great find. Don't give up it's worth it.

Second, if you have OIL leaking from the master cylinder that is a VERY bad thing. If it is leaking from the master cylinder it should be brake fluid coming out of it.

I suggest you work on getting this bike working properly with STOCK parts before you go causing other problems with mods. You'll get lost in problems if you don't and you'll never get to see how great that bike is as it was designed.

I see that kind of stuff parted out on ebay every day.

Not that mods are all bad but just start with a good running stock bike to begin with is all I'm saying.

On another note, that has to be the absolutely ugliest seat I have EVER seen.

Congrats on your new acquisition! Somebody already did you a favor and drilled the rotors nicely! The standard doesn't require as much modding for modern calipers as the Special did, but still needs an adapter bracket, and a little modding of the caliper housing to accomodate the thicker rotors! Steve has a nice write up on it.

The front MC reservoirs are not available, but you can get an aftermarket MC for ~$80.00. Yes, SS lines are the way to go. The Standard calipers are easier to find replacement pistons if they are badly pitted. I would take them apart first to see what condition they are in. You may not need to replace the pistons, just clean out the corrosion from behind/beneath the O-ring groove in the caliper....and may or may not need to actually replace the O-ring and dust cover with a rebuild kit?! Yep, Fork Brace also a good thing!

          Have fun with the project!

Looks like the bike has been indoors, the tach and speedo still show RED, not a faded out red. I would dump the air caps, and put on the stock caps with progressive springs. The fork seals should be replace with OEM, if they need it. Go to georgefix on ebay for carb and petcock rebuild parts, as he seems to know what fits what. he will also put the correct jets in the kit if you have a non stock exhaust/intake set-up.
Welcome to the madness, and I think a backrest, or box with a pad, will help a LOT with the lady.

BTW this is the first time I have ever seen a RDL saddle on an XSor XJ1100...

                  Exhaust

Are those the original exhaust? If so, they are worth more than the whole bike!

There isn't any back on it! Where will you tie on the tent, sleeping bag and pack?

A cooler is completely out of the question.

sorry not the master cylinder, the stator cover. the crank shaft oil seals are probably bad. i saw the post about non-case-splitting aftermarket seals. bought a flywheel puller for the alternator rotor, gotta talk to napa about those part numbers. btw, that rotor is rusty. any reason i shouldn't drop it in some naval jelly and polish it up?
