  • Help needed with rear brake

Thanks in advance for any advice that is given.

Needed to put new pads of the back because of wear. When I went to push the caliper back in with a C-clamp, the thing would't budge past a certain point. By lossening the bleeder screw I was able to get the caliber pushed all the way in to give me enough room to put the new pads on. Once I put everything together and tried hitting the brake...nothing. The pedal pushes all the way down, but the wheel doesn't stop.

Do I need to rebuild the caliper? If so, does anyone know were I can get the parts??

    Spooge hole blocked

Sounds like a classic "spooge hole" blockage. You need to take rear MC apart and clean the tiny spooge hole (allows fluid return from caliper). You may not need parts. If you do, check here: http://stores.ebay.com/GEORGEFIXS-MOTORCYCLE-PARTS

If you don't know the history of the brakes, it could very well be 'stuff' in both the master cylinder and the caliper. I'd highly recommend removing both and fully disassembling/cleaning them. You could also have a rusty caliper piston (common problem) that will need to be replaced. Replacements can be found here: http://hvccycle.com/brake-caliper-pistons.html . These guys also sell seal kits, etc.

If you find 'stuff' in the rear, the fronts are probably just as bad; you really should go through all the brakes. 99% of the brake problems on these bikes is due to contamination/corrosion of the system from age. New seals are rarely needed unless your bike has high miles (say over 50K) or really bad corrosion.

Sounds good guys. I'll start by taking apart the rear caliper & master cylinder to make sure there's no gunk or worn out parts. Thx!

My master cylinder looked to be in good working order I ended up ordering a new caliper for the back. Put the new caliper on, new pads, bled the brakes, & presto, works like a charm now. Thanks for the feedback.

taking it apart, giving it a good cleaning, putting it back together and if it works properly all you have spent is time

                    I had similar problem

I had almost the same problem all around on the brakes on my XS when I first got it, cleaned both master cylinders, then 1 at a time I took each caliper apart cleaned, re-lubed and assembled, didn't have to buy any seals at all.
You will notice, especially on older motorcycles, that sometimes the brake piston(s) will be pitted, this is usually not a problem, but if the piston comes out but doesn't go back in, a very common problem is the seal that is inside the caliper that the piston pushes through, usually the seal is not bad, but corrosion has built up in the grove behind the seal, which causes it to push the seal out a bit putting too much pressure on the piston, carefully remove the seal and I usually start with a dental pick and then finish with a small piece of 3m scotch brite, clean with brake cleaner , re-lube and assemble.
