So I was reinstalling my camshafts, and I thought I had the dots lined up with the t mark, but this is how I ended up...the t mark is off but both dots are even...

Question, is your cct installed? In other words is all the slack out of the timing chain?
If so, then I've got something for you to look at.
On the other side of the cam sprockets the 2 bolt holes, one of them has a little 'crown' (best word I can think of to describe it) above the hole.
With the dots lined up both sprockets line up with these 'crowns' up too.
I know it sounds weird, but it happened to me, I had one of my sprockets 180degs out and the dots were just a hair off.
Someone here posted pics showing it and sure enough that was it!
Edit. I just saw the pic of the timing plate and it looks like you may be a tooth or two off.Last edited by GLoweVA; 05-27-2012, 11:56 PM.Hi, my name is George & I'm a twisty addict!

Pull the cams again and reset your engine to the T mark, then install your cams again. Make sure you have the slack out of the chain when putting them back in and the chain is on the sprocket on the crank. If yours is anything like mine, my crank was dead nuts on the T mark but the dots were just slightly off. I fiddled around and move the cams back and forth 1 tooth to see if it would line up better. I was finially convinced it was where it needed to be... visit the acct threads, there is a lot of discussion and tips that can help you. As mentioned above, there is a mark on the sprocket at one of the bolt holes that serves as a marker to orient the sprocket on the cams properly. The mark is suposed to line up with the dot in the cam...Last edited by WMarshy; 05-28-2012, 03:55 AM.'79 XS11 F

Yep, you need to re-align the cam chain. Several options here, but first is pull the tensioner to give the chain some slack. Then either remove the bolts from the cam sprockets, but essentually, you need to be able to move the cam chain on the cam sprockets while you turn the crank. You do nto want the cams to turn though.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Once you take the cams back off this would be a PERFECT time to verify your T mark is actually correct, they often can get bent over the years.Nathan

You don't need to pull the cams; you do need to disassemble pretty much all the rest though.
Pull the CCT, the cam guide between the cams, and the bolts holding the sprockets on. Now rotate the crankshaft clockwise to the 'T' mark, making sure the cams don't turn. Now you can disengage the cam sprockets and move them the one or two teeth you need on the chain to line them up. This can be a bit finicky... Once you get the sprocket holes lined up on the cams, that should be it. Make sure the cam chain is still on the crank sprocket, reinstall the CCT, and rotate the motor once to verify the timing. I only install one cam sprocket bolt until I'm sure the timing is right...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Do not
allow the cams to rotate. Get the sprockets off the cams as Steve says, before you rotate the engine to TDC, then start over from scratch. Be careful using a wrench to rotate the cams to the proper position once the pistons are at TDC. It's easy to break the gallery casings with the wrench.mack
