Hearing a slap after auto cct change and valve clearance job

FWIW, when I did the ratchet CCT switch, I never heard the plunger pop out and my chain slapped around and skipped a couple teeth. As I was removing it, I heard the "zip-pop" of the plunger extending. I reset the cam-chain timing, reinstalled the plunger (hearing the "zip-pop" this time), and all was well. The bike ran, but poorly, a couple of teeth off, but much better after retiming.

I have no idea why it didn't extend the first time.

I think in the original post, someone recommended taking a screwdriver and inserting it into the CCT to push out the plunger manually before installing the spring. Dont use much force, just enough to get it to extend and make contact with the chain. This will ensure the plunger has deployed and you wont have a problem like you described. The final tension will come from the spring when torqued in... JAT

I have the 700 Raptor ACCT in my SG and no noise difference at all,if anything,it runs smoother.Hope you find the problem.

I agree, the noise level didnt increase but it did change. I think the noise from the chain was removed and allows you to hear the cam/tappet noise more clearer...

Personally, I think that sounds quite loud. The video was taken inside a garage though, wasn't it? That does make noises sound different but, even so, my own autoCCT did not sound as loud as that.

I'm wondering if your chain is badly stretched. I would remove the CCT and see how far the plunger has deployed. If a lot, then I'd say your chain is loose. If not deployed much, then your chain is OK.

I'm not saying it is this, but a header pipe/cylinder head gasket leak can sound like your video. I realise that the noise was not there before the CCT change though, so it's not likely to be that. But maybe worth a check.

I have new header gaskets on there so I don't think it's that. I'll check to see how far the plunger is extended tonight after work.

For the first 50 miles she ran perfect after the acct change, it's just when missed 2nd gear and she revved up high and backfired on the way down that the noise started.. A compression test would rule out a head gasket, right?

And yes, the video was taken in the shop. But it is very noticeable outside also

it was the headers loose.. I guess I should make time other than at midnight to work on it so I'm actually thinking logically.. I should have checked because last week I found the spark plugs loose also.

Great you found it. I remember that noise from my old Triumphs (which leaked regularly from the header pipe to cylinder head joint)... it can sound like a metallic slapping. In your case, I'm pleased it was that, as it's an easy fix!
