    How big?

KA1J says the ball is Ø4.77mm/Ø0.185" which implies he measured the thing with a metric caliper but rounded out too much because 4.77 x 25.4 = 0.1878 which in turn says it's most likely a Ø3/16" ball.
Mind you, that's either a horkin' great key in the photo or a different ball. Admittedly my size estimation powers have faded since I started to wear bi-focals but the ball next to the key looks to be Ø1/8" or smaller.
And while I doubt it fell out of a rear wheel bearing I do hope KA1J discovers where it did come from so he can sleep at nights again.

Hi Fred, yes, I did measure it with a digital caliper which makes all the guesswork less problematic. The key in the photo is the one for the XJ11 and it's pretty much a standard key, it's made by ilco & is from blank # X117 / YH48 & no, the ball is the same one, I put it in a jar so I could access it if I needed to.

As one of the other posts said, maybe it's from a tool & while that's apparently a strong possibility, I haven't yet found a defective tool. Since it's just happenstance that it showed up where it did, I put the wheel back on, started driving and haven't yet heard grinding.

      Yet...

Yeah, lots of worries but only because of where it was found. It appears from the different replies I've received that it's not part of the rear end of the bike and it's not the right size for anything else on the bike. I'm good with that so there's nothing to worry about the bike breaking down in the middle of BF nowhere. It's the damage a missing bearing can do that is the issue to me.

I went & miced the pellets in my pellet gun & the ones from the old BB gun and they didn't match (the BBs in the gun are copper colored anyway).

If it's from a tool, I'll be finding out which one it is soon enough...

                Solved!

Solved... Iruk was on target. I went to use my 6" 3/8 extension and discovered the ball was missing from the keeper. I remember tapping the axle with it and it must have fallen out then, I haven't used it since then. Has to be from that extension. Now I can quit worrying that some shoe is going to drop. And being Craftsman, I took it back to sears and they gave me a new one.

                Schweet!
