  • Loose Ball Bearing from rear end?

Rats... I was about to put my rear tire back on the bike after getting a new one on it & I found a ball bearing on the floor below where the rear axle goes. It's 4.77mm or .185" in diameter. Where might this have come from & what's the best way to get it back where it belongs?

    Rats...

I should add I just opened some boxes of XJ11 parts I just got in & opened the boxes next to the rear of the bike & it's possible something fell out of those shipping boxes?

I felt inside the axle bits in the center of the wheel and the inside of the drive shaft housing but don't feel any loose areas where a ball bearing could have fallen out.

I've been googling & searching for ball bearings on the XJ11 and this bearing is too large for the detent on the carb bearing and it was directly under the drive shaft housing.

I hate to put the rear wheel back on without knowing if this ball bearing came from the XJ11.

If you had a ball bearing fall out of your rear end, you need to lighten-up on the iron in your diet! (sorry, couldn't resist).

Now that was funny Sid........ a more serious note.....that bearing didn't come from the back wheel of your scoot.......but would work great for your slingshot........my man-cave has on ocassion revealed misleading parts that showed up out of nowhere..

The older I get the more I worry about things dropping out when they're not supposed to...

But... No ball bearings back there anywhere? I've looked at the parts diagrams including the hard to get bearings but I take it those are either sealed Ball bearings or they're rollers.

If nothing's back there with them it's a concern cause I haven't even seen a ball bearing for two years & that was when I replaced the original XJ650 steering bearings with rollers but I did that up in MA, not here and I used the leaf blower to clean the floor before working on the wheels & gussying the bike up. Somehow that ball bearing showed up over the last two days.

Iron in my diet... Slingshot... Heh, I needed that!

            Hi KA1J,
a single ball would have to escape from it's cage, was there any bearing cage debris laying around next to it?
If not, it's most likely an orphan.

              Hi Fred,

No, nothing at all, just that solitary bearing. I can move the elements in the wheel a little bit, they need to be held in by torque to abut each other but the bearings themselves in the wheel appear to spin without anything seeming to be out of line.

Most confusing where it would have come from, the only anything I've been doing in there is on the XJ11. Guess if I start hearing bad noises I'll have a better idea where it's from...

              Maybe it's from a tool?

I don't like finding spare parts...

I just took a photo of the bearing & put it back right where I found it. I put the bike key next to it with the tip pointing at it so you can compare size. now you can see why I'm concerned about where I found the %^&* thing.

Nothing back there that has a ball like that in there. Any of the beings have much larger balls or are needled bearing.

Only thing I could think of would be the little detent ball in the carb choke rod, but I think that one is smaller.

                    Hi Nate,

I'd done a search for things like this in past posts and came up with that possibility in the enrichment assembly but my carb is working fine and I just got a 2nd XJ11 carb set last week and thought it might have come from there but no, it's all intact as well.

                    Ugh...

My best guess is it came from the box-o-parts you mentioned. I know of nothing in that area that would use such a small bearing.

Looks like about the right size to be a detent ball from a kill switch or somthing similar.
