  • Grease Those Splines Boys!!!

    That zerk fitting is useless.....

49K on the bike (the XJ I bought), plenty of grease in there (gobs inside the shaft tube) but it wasn't getting to where it needed to be. Looks like a good idea to pull the FD and manually lube these, ya think?

The splines inside the coupler are just as bad; too bad, the FD seems fine otherwise.. Time to go digging in the spares.

Holy smokes. Could you give a little more detail on where these gears are? Far as I know the final drive is lubed by the gear oil so I must be missing something.

That's the driveshaft splines that go into the coupler on the final drive. They're supposed to get greased by squirting grease into that zerk fitting on the swingarm right in front of the FD. Doesn't work too well....

The face width of the gears is fairly small considering you could be putting 90hp on them. I was surprised when I did the final swap.

Those are the FD end of the drive shaft. They slide into the splined coupler of the FD. Which lives in the ballooned out end of the swingarm where the FD connects. That is where the grease (zerk) fitting is Steve referred to.

That thing still had to be beat pretty hard to get that tore up. But the corosion shows how little grease got in there for sure.

Ebay is full of those driveshafts starting at $9 so they seem pretty plentiful, not the end of the world if it wears out.

I took my zerk fitting off and blanked it off. It's completely useless. The FD needs greasing manually, 100% sure...

Funny, that's the next thing on my to do list after I get back from a family reunion. I already drained the final and middle. Any tips I need to know beyond what's in the Clymer manual before I grease this puppy manually?

I know you are replacing that shaft but for it to be worn that bad then the splines in the final drive have to have wear also. Put a good shaft against it and even greased it will wear quickly. Thanks for putting the evidence in peoples face, pictures are worth a thousand words and maybe seeing is believing.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

I would bet that the FD spline steel is harder than the driveshaft steel and did not wear much at all.

the wear looks alot like the speedo drive on my bike that looked like it hasn't had any grease in it for a while.

Steve, that is pretty bad wear, I never would have thought. OK, 11 FD's are a dime a dozen tho. That bike must have had one sloppy(er) drive train.
