  • Final Drive Conversion Question

    I am in the process of changing over the final drive of my 79 XS1100 for one from an XS850 that I purchased used. It came with the pinion assembly out of the housing. As I try to re-assemble it, it is a very tight fit. What is the best way to accomplish this? Is it okay to tap in with a hammer or is there a better way? Thanks.

    Some lube and some wiggling. I wouldn't hit it with a hammer.

      Why was it disassembled? That makes me suspicious of whether or not the gears match.

      You'll need to check the lash for sure.

        Apply some heat.... I had mine apart and heated the main housing in a oven at 200 degrees for about 1/2 hour, the pinion slipped right in...

            It should go in lightly tapping it "around the clock", BTDT. When the pinion is to be removed a slide hammer is needed, it is a very precise fit.
