  • Possible stupid question

Other than the color coding and possibly the length of the spark plug wires, is there any reason why a left coil wouldn't work on the the right side (for 2 & 3)??? My right coil went deep sea fishing on me, but I do have a spare left one........I don't know of any reason why it wouldn't work, but, tis better to be safe than lose an ignition box.

I agree, as long as the wires are long enough to reach #1 & #4.

And as long as the spare coil is the 2H7 series, not the ones for the 81 and later models. Your 78 uses the 1.5 ohm coils, with the 1.5 ohm ballast resistor for a total of 3 ohms that the TCI sees. Using the later series coils would both provide too much resistance....that won't hurt the TCI, but you won't get the proper spark strength since the later coils are built for full 12 volts all the time, the 78-80 are designed for ~9 volts...what they get after the 1.5 ohm ballast resistor.
