  • Tires... Last redux from me

I have to have new tires. There's a slick on the back of the XJ11 and it's not good, has to be changed. I've looked for the best prices I can find and it looks like the Motorcycle Superstore is the best price I'm going to get. There is a new Yama dealership in the area and they've been open for less than 2 months & looking to drum up business. They will give within a few bucks of MSS price on a tire. Seeing as I'd like them to succede, I'll pay the little extra & support them even though the tax will add to the difference. For the rear on the XJ11 a Dunlop 130/90/16 is $92 at the dealer & MSS is $87

OK, so the tires I have on my XJ650 are Dunlop D404 and they're pretty nice tires but I'd like to get the best I can get without paying for a name or a tire that wears too fast. Seeing as the dealer is giving me a good price break, what other tire should I talk to him about that...

    Doesn't wear out rapidly
    Good on gas mileage
    Handles well in the rain
    is affordable
    and better than Dunlop D404?

    Thanks

I've put over 1000 miles on my Shinko 230 TourMaster's now and love them. Great in all the roads around here can throw @ it. Been in the wet a few times and they handle like a champ. Others on here have a mixed bag with these. BA80 said he only got 2000 miles out of a rear TourMaster. I've not seen much wear on mine and ride 2 up on my bike most the time and carry alot of luggage weight. YMMV but for around $150 a set they were worth the gamble... and are paying off. I will be installing a set of them on my V-Star next month too.

Ride great, handle great in diverse climate and road conditions, and CHEAP!

Unfortunately, they're ALL gonna wear out faster than they did years ago. The compounds used on the sidewalls is now the compond used in the center section. Also, the higher the mph rating, the softer the compond. That same brandname/model tire that I used to get 10-12thousand on the rear now sees 6-8thousand tops before shot. This goes for ALL brands. This was told to me this spring by a local dealership's purchaser and scoot tire expert. Least I know now HOW I'm getting 'bent-over' by sly marketing techniques. Trbig's comments earlier this spring pertaining to tire wear......or in this case, lack of, that alot of us are aware of , but just have not commented on much got my curisosity up enough to to go find out.

Well... One thing in this New England area is whoever engineers our local roads is in bed with someone who hates motorcycles & as a result there's a strip to snag your tires in the middle of every asphalt road in CT. So I need longevity but also partial immunity from the near trolley track-like asphalt seams around. So add the ability to reject seams in the road as a major desire of mine...

The Dunlop 404 is the 2nd worst tire I've ever put on mileage-wise. It's a decent tire sticky-wise, but I can barely get 3k miles out of one.

I've been happy lately with the Shinko 781. It's only getting 5-8k miles riding fairly aggressively, but at @ $50 a piece, and I change my own tires, I can't complain too much.

Tod actually means the Shinko 712. It is a very good tire for the price.

If your going to buy Dunlop go for the Elite 3 size MT90-16. They wear real well and handle great. My last one lasted in the area of 12K.

I better stop now or someone will accuse me of owning stock in these companies and pushing their products.

              Bridgestone Spitfires

I got a set of Bridgestone Spitfires from JakeWilson.com for $138.98 TOTAL (rear $75.99 & front $62.99) with shipping a couple of months ago. I've bought all my tires (4 sets for differant bikes) from them in the last couple of years. Very fast shipping, like 2-3 days at my door....
