  • Rectifier Woes

    Hey All,
I am a long time member who likes to search the forums before asking a question. Here is my problem, I had to replace the connector that comes from the alternator that has the white wires in it, and also had to replace the end on the wire harness. Now I can not get the alternator to charge. I checked the resistance on the white wires, they are .3 ohms on all combos. The Green and brown wires have a resistance of 3.6ohms. So they are close enough to spec based on the accuracy of my multi-meter. I believe the problem maker is the rectifier. I have one ordered and will be here next week. So my question in the mean time: does it matter the order of the white wires to the rectifier? If so how do i reorder them correctly. I believe I got them in the correct order by doing them one at a time. I did try grounding the green wire to the frame, but that did not fix anything.
I am supposed to be doing the entire Blue Ridge Parkway next week, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I also have #1 not firing. I did just rebuild the engine as well. That is believe is carb related due to the fact the plug is not even getting wet but there is plenty of vacuum on the air inlet side, I put my hand on it and it pulled enough to create a seal.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Nope, the order of the three wires makes absolutely no difference; that's one reason they're all the same color....

One check you might make if that got hot enough to melt the connector is to check each white wire to ground (while unplugged from the regulator). If any of the wires are going to ground, that will kill your output...

I checked the white to ground using a voltmeter on the continuity selection, they all "beeped". I assume this is bad? that is just the connector on the coil itself. Tips or tricks? Any way to save it? Please let me know!

On a side note, #1 was not getting fuel, the float drop was not enough to allow the needle to drop down. Now all 4 are firing strong. Just need this charging issue fixed.

Yep, that's bad... None should read to ground, so the stator is toast. You could 'save' it (by having an electric motor shop rewind it), but that will cost far more than getting another one.

            Stator?

Is that the thingy that the spinny thing on the right side goes around and around in? The one with the wires in it. If that's it I have one, but I don't know how I could get it to you by Wed.

                Stator Replacement

I will be sending you mine, probably tomorrow. That way you can get SFSPECBIKER79 his back to him. Since his is off a running bike and mine isn't, it won't be a crap shoot as to if it will work.

Thanks guys! Ended up not grabbing the stator from SFSPECBIKER79 since it is not going to be riding weather here for a few days because of t-showers. Got a back up bike for my ride (2005 V-Star 1100). Part of me is nervous about breaking in an engine on a 1000 mile ride. I am confident on my work, just not my ability to hold out of the throttle on that much of a ride with friends. And I don't want to be stranded on the Blue ridge. If I had finished the bike a month ago, there would be no question. I can't wait to get the charging back. Thanks again Tim!
