  • Fuel Filter Air Lock

Hey guys, Can someone tell me how to get the air out of my fuel filter? Filters are new, flow direction is correct, fuel tank vent is not blocked, carb vents are not blocked and fuel flows freely from the petcocks but there is only a few drops of fuel In the filter at any given time.

There will always be a pocket of air in there, unless your filters are below the bowls. It should not affect operation.

At this point there's a lot of air in them. they are not fully below the bowls but they are pretty close to it. Why is the air there? Should the filter not just fill up as a fuel line would?

You would think so, doesn't seem to work that way.

I have air pockets in my fuel filters but they flow fine.

Yes it does and that's why I don't get it. That air should find its way into the fuel tank and leave the lines and filters full of fuel.

Do you have the filters standing on end or laying on thier sides?

I have to find a way to route mine. I couldnt get enough fuel with them on there, I had air in the fuel lines and could not get them to fill up. I ran fuel lines straight to the carbs and that was a pain cause i had to cut them real short to keep them from crimping. I have clear lines. My tank is clean but i still want filters.

Mine usually are at least 1/2 full of air, sometimes more. It bugged the crap out of me for a while. I EVENTUALLY quit worrying about it.

Of course, if you REALLY want to quit worrying about it, buy metal filters instead of plastic...

                    Hi Rob

I had same issues, my motor was starved for fuel, could'nt even tune them properly. I just got rid of them altogether. You have filters in the tank, filters on the fuel valves, enough already.

I had the same problem when my filters were lying horizontally on top of the carbs. Bike was starving before the fuel light would come on. I recently replaced my filters with smaller square ones, and installed them between the middle two carbs with fuel flow going up through them. I haven't looked to see if there's any air in them, but I was driving around nearly empty with no problems.

Well my issue that is not "fully" resolved with the misfire that's all over the map "may" be being caused by poor or inconsistent fuel delivery. With the engine running at idle the supply really looks like a drip, drip, drip. I may remove them or evacuate the air from the filters with a piece of small DIA heat shrink that will fit down the fuel line to the filter.

I have mine on about a 30 degree tilt attached right @ the fuel T's on the carbs. There is just enough hose to connect the filters to the T's. And then the lines are crossed to opposite petcocks. With this set up I turn the petcocks to "Prime" and you can't count to 3 Mississippi before the filters are completely filled, and we're talking a foot of line on each and some up angles to make the cross-over from 1 side to the next. Fire bike and turn both pet cocks to on and the filters stay full.... even if I kick on the throttle lock @ 5,000 rpm and watch, they stay full...

Best check and make sure you don't have an air leaks in the line somewhere or a kink in the house. Or make sure there is no blockage in the petcock itself. I had a fuel flow problem once... turns out I didn't fully have the fuel in the full on position. hopefully you figure it out

2 fuel lines together, what ive done in the
past is to have a fuel line conected to the tank,
and have the other fuel line disconnected and raised in a container,
turn on the petcock with the fuel line connected
and let the fuel flow thru until most of the air is out.
