  • Magazine article on XS1100

    Hi Folks

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading an article I had published in a bike magazine, way back in 1990? If so, I could probably scan it in a legible form and put it on here. I just found the mag in my attic a few days ago!

It seems a bit ironic to me now, in 2012, that I wrote it in 1990 from a nostalgic "oooh, remember these bikes?" perspective! Oh youth!
It's four pages (small ones) and five pix (all black and white photos taken on that stuff called FILM).

I do remember that I was paid £40 (about $60) for the article.....that was 22 years ago and quite a sum!

      Blast from the past

OK... here it is. Remember it was written 22 years ago by a younger, enthusiastic person than the jaded cynic I am now. Prices and costs are way out, of course, as is my comment about "bulletproof gearbox"!! Interesting that synthetic oil pops up all those years ago. And strange that I am now almost the "55 year old bloke " that I allude to so patronisingly in the text........

This is the bike I fitted nitrous oxide to a few months after the article..... I see the editor titled the article "Strange Yams"... the cheek of it!

This article shows I've always been in love with these bikes! Nothin much has changed in 22 years

Nice, that pretty much covers it for me. When will they come around to our way of thinking?
I would have loved a better look at the giant tank. I just came across a company that is selling them for xs's the other day.

Great story, well written. Alloy 6 gal. tank got my attention. Never heard of that before. Sounds like a fine idea. East of I-5, Oregon gets pretty sparse and longer legs are good over there. Thanks for putting that up, James.

Alas no! I had to sell the bike to get a deposit for my house. It had the nitrous oxide on it at that point. It was really awful, having to sell it. I've made up for it since though by buying another three........

It's the 'Martini' fairing. sprayed black. Actually, it was a fantastic fairing to ride with because it seemed to make the bike faster, rather than slow it down. The leg shileds are detachable, leaving a cosmic looking belly pan and half fairing, with the articulating handlebar bit.

I picked up one of those fairings last year for £5! On eBay. That's about $8. Do you think I paid too much?
