  • Standard Yamaha hard bags on a 79 special?

Has anyone adapted (what I think are) Standard factory hard bags to mount on a Special? The chrome piece that goes from the top of the shock to the foot peg, at least I think that it is supposed to do that, doesn't fit.

Basically, the angle of the piece that goes over the muffler is wrong. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Your install points are correct but I think there is a difference between the Special and the standard and specifically I think the bar the foot pegs and muffler attach is actually a little different. I know on my 1980 G the original pipes and even the Mac replacements hang lower than what I see in the picture you have.

To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

The foot peg brackets (that the mufflers mount to) are almost straight back on the Standard models (ok, all but the Venturer / H models). On all the Special models they slope up as they go back. The stock exhaust follows that slope or lack of slope on all the models, the bend seems to be in the 4-2 collector piece.

So the bracket that hangs the bags on a standard model does nto mount up to the Special models as you have discovered. The only way I could see it fitting would be to do some permanent modifications. I do not see how adaptor brackets would let the bags sit low enough and not interfere with the exhaust.
