  • Autolite 63

I have autolite 63 plugsin my bike, that is what i came with from the PO. I read on here that the autolite match for the ngk would be #53 or #54. Am i running the wrong plug?I will probably just get the ngk's but what is the gap? I will search the gap but i figured since i was posting this, might as well ask. Thanks. You guys have helped me a lot.

NGK BP6ES just get those. Don't remember the gap off hand but it is in the manual. Don't have a manual? Get one of those too.

I've run all 3 in my XS... it likes NGK... Personally for a standard style plug NGK makes the best quality IMO

Autolite has gone down hill since Allied Signal, Honeywell, Or Fram (whatever they call themselves this week) bought them. The only Champion plugs worth anything are their HD truck/RV plugs and their full on race plugs, which don't apply here...

Jap bike needs a Jap plug.... I was always taught that, and I stick with it. YMMV

to get back onto subject Autolite 63 crosses to a NGK BR8ES which is 2 heat ranges colder than the stock plug BR6ES... this is why you are probably fouling them out...

                        best plugs?

so ngks are good, but what are the best? as of now i have the autolites until i get my bike on the road and they were the cheapest ones at the store. are there platinum tipped ones that fit our bike?
1979 xs special, just finished the top end rebuild and then i still have lots of work.
                        progress thus far...

NGK IX Iridium plugs are hands down the BEST plug on the market for motorcycles.... the number for xs1100 is a BPR6EIX. Do have to warn you they cost about $8 each. But if you want the best performing and longest lasting plug on the market, that is the one you want. They use them in most all the newer bikes for 2 reasons. #1 the very fine Iridium core tip takes alot less energy to create a spark equal that of a copper core, and #2 they last 4 times longer under the extreme conditions and RPM's seen in bikes.

I have yet to put a set in "Old Man"... I've used them in every other bike I've owned. Got a set in the tool box to go into "Izzy" this weekend.

I had 2 sets of BP6ES in the tool box so I wanted to use them up before taking the plunge into the IX plugs. So I will be getting a set for him after this last set I put in are done... so next year

@ this point is when most people would say YMMV or just my .02... I'm not gonna The NGK IX plugs are THE BEST plug on the market for motorcycles. ask any dealer, any bike racer, any shop... they will agree with me

BP6ES are 4-5 bucks each for me at NAPA. 8 bucks isn't much of an increase for a four-popper if they last more than twice as long.

Spark plugs are one of those subjects I consider 'controversial' since most 'advances' in plugs, like the wildly expensive and over-rated Bosch +" " plugs, don't do much. Do they ACTUALLY last that much longer? What happens when they fuel or oil foul? Can they stand up to a wire-wheeling for re-use?

Example- I had a fuel fouling issue and had to dry/wire wheel the BP6ES's (remove fine film) and they handled it like champs.

Not trying to be a dick or call you out, just curious if they're not just hype and looking for real-world examples not wrapped in advertisment propaganda. I tend to hold all of you guys in higher esteem than ads or journalists.

FWIW, Advance Auto Parts is a NGK dealer. If they don't have your plug, they can get it same day. They list the iridium plug @ $7.09 and the BP6ES is under $3.
