    Lining a Rim

    I got some new tubeless rims and I really want to swap out the front one ASAP cause I am running tubeless on a tube rim now. I pulled the front tire off (it was holding air fine) and found that it was full of about a quart of water. There is a bit of pitting here and there but certainly nothing I am really concerned about. I am more just thinking that since I have it off I want to do something with it before I put it on.

    So, anyone ever lined a rim? I know I can just fill the pits but I am thinking more like tining the whole rim, sort of like a tank.

    Nate, I've had luck in the past with just brushing some good oil-based paint on wheels to 'seal' them. I had a set of mag wheels that leaked through the casting, that fixed 'em....

      Yeah I was thinking just a decent oil paint would work but figured I would see what others have done.

          No wonder my wife couldn't carry it!

          I wouldn't have any problem mounting a tire to it without doing anything to it, just figured might as well when it was off.

            this is the front you just got? A quart of water weighs about 2 lbs, how 2 lbs of water sloshing around in there affects tire balance would be relevant to whether balance beads actually work or not, eh?

              They do have some sort of liquid that semi-trucks can put in their tires as a balancing fluid and that did cross my mind

              I got the tires from Tom but pretty sure they came off parts bikes.

                Handling

                The only handling I ever experienced with that rim was moving it from one side of the garage to the other. Came off a wreck I bought. Wonder what caused the wreck?

                    Made the mistake of deciding to "clean up" one of the rims.....WOW these rims really are a VERY rough cast!!! Now I am in too deep to to just stop and now I have to keep going!

                            Those are going on the modder bike (the one I was just getting ready to assemble before I picked up the current-project XJ that sidetracked me...) so they're still hiding in a corner.

                            As far as removing those 'ridges', have at 'em. The wheel rim after removing those is still over a 1/4" thick and up to 3/8" in places. I'm convinced those are only there for two reasons; a convenient place to clip a balance weight, and a better place to hide the parting line on the casting.

                            Yep, those castings are pretty rough.... I smoothed on my wheels for days.....
