What mods do you have on your bike? Is it stock? Im not for sure but i think your jets are way too big. Im pretty sure that 137.5 is stock for a 79. Im sure someone on here will be able to tell you for sure. Welcome to the site.

      Hey Matt, welcome to XS11.

As indicated, the stock jetting on a 79 was 42.5 pilots with 137.5 mains. The jetting your using is huge!! Look at your plugs and see how wet/black they are. I would think they look like a coal miners convention with those jets.

Yamaha did offset the jets on the outer carbs from inners to cool the inside cylinders as emissions required leaner running conditions. But they went away from it as it really did not do anything for them.

Guys, he's talking about the main air jets on the outside of the bell on the intake of the carbs. I was thinking they were like a 180 or 185? But I've been wrong lots before.

Matt, if someone told me that it was OK to run jets 4 sizes different than the others on the same motor.... That would be one less person I'd listen to for advice. Just my 2 cents.

My first check would be to remove the idle mixture screws to see if you have tips broken off of them. They should be nice and pointy. Keep track of where they are to begin with though. Screw them down, counting the turns, until they VERY LIGHTLY SEAT. A light pressure with the thumb and forefinger, then install them to the same spot after you remove and check.
Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

Well, congrats on one heck of a deal if it runs at all. Now, look under the FAQ section of the site and find the "What to look for in a Neglected XS11" thread and read through that.

Also get a manual and go through ALL of the maintenance recommendations.

As to the jetting, are you speaking of the air jets or the main jets as being those sizes? Main jets are in the bowl area of the carb, the idle air jets are in the inlet bell.

Since you stated it is your first bike, I also STRONGLY suggest taking the MSF basic rider course. Even the old salty dogs say they learn something in that class.

We want pictures!!! A free XS11 is everyone's bike porn.

Have you torn the carbs down completely and cleaned everything. Often takes two or three times to get them right. Good pracice.

As with the others, this is a big bike. It's heavy and it is a handful. BE CAREFUL and take a class or two. Spend a bunch of time in an empty parking lot figuring out clutch, throttle, and brake.

You'll love her but you've got to respect her.
