    Butterfly shaft seals

I am looking to get new butterfly shaft seals for my '79 special (with the correct carbs); are the ones that Mikesxs sells (Part #48-5021 the same ones that are used on my carbs? If not is there anywhere else to get them? Thanks guys.

Yup those fit. You will have to order from http://www.xs650direct.com as you are in Canada though. You also will want the Throttle shaft screws unless you are extremely lucky. Part #48-5022

Canada can be an issue, but factory butterfly shaft seals are available, and on this side of the border, they're cheaper.

Better double check, the early and late type carbs might use different seals according to the parts fiche.

I put the XS650 direct info in there as MikesXS will not ship to Canada. XS650direct is the same site but the Canadian version is all. The $2.49 for 1 seal at powersports is more than the $4.90 for the pair at XS650direct. Big deal eh...8 cents a carb times four carbs would be all of 32 cents difference

As Phil has just pointed out, the seal do not appear to be universal. The part number I posted is for the late XS1100, and XS650 is on that list. Since Mike's XS only has one seal for all those XS650 carbs, they are either universal or strickly match the part number I listed. On Phil's list, there is no XS650 and that is the proper seal for your carburetor.

In my own experience with rubber parts from Mike's XS, they are best avoided when OEM is available.

I just went to the MikesXS site and it shows a bit differently. There is an OEM Reference # • 25-14997-00-00 that does not show up on XS650Direct. I was not aware of this as apparently the MikesXS site has had a few changes that were not passed to its Canadian site. Given the OEM reference number makes it much easier to research. I would agree that there may be two different parts so you may have to go to another supplier.

Hi guys, one more question (and this one is a little embarrassing!) how many seals do I need for all four carbs?

I just read today- posts posted today on the XS650 site that the MikesXS throttle shaft seals for the XS650 BS34 mikunis are a loose fit and leak air. I ordered some for my 650 last week and am waiting on them. I read to use genuine Yamaha seals.

You will need 8. I just did this about a month ago on my xs750 cause they were sucking air. I had no trouble with any screws or anything, everything came apart very easy but i do think the PO had been working on the bike before i got it and i think he gave up cause of the idle racing and the butterfly seals fixed that and now i have a nice bike for very cheap.

I finally decided to use Len Chacal over at XJbikes as he seems to know which part fits what best. He's pricier that other places so I tend to look for the same parts only less expensive. He uses his own identification numbers so you can't cross-reference the part numbers to a product.

He will help guide you to what you need but his parts list is so extensive you may wonder what really needs to be replaced. Not such a bad thing but all those choices & you start rethinking & start shopping more.
