Many have noticed that a tire does pretty good to about the wear bars on the tread, then the rubber under that seems to last about as well as a pencil eraser rubber. I've seen tires that looked like they'd go another thousand or two judging by previous wear, and be showing chords after a couple hundred.

+1 on that. I'm gonna have to keep a close eye on the front too.
That's a little easier to see every day though.

Just a wee bit closer would be a good idea. Tires do not wear that badly overnight. Your life and others depend on you being vigilant.

Luckily at the times I ride, the chances of anyone else getting squished if I go down are pretty slim . Except for deer. Those things are like a plague down here...

But in all seriousness, I parked the bike till I could get a new tire on it once I discovered the steel. And your right, they dont wear overnight, but I was surprised how fast that rear tire went from some tread to riding metal. In any case, it gets a good checkup before its Sunday night fueling every week now...well, when it is running anyhow.

Guess I'm a little Anal I safety check everything before I go anywhere. I guess 6 years of driving Hazmat will do that to a Fella... But then again my left side cover on the XS blew off on my road test today.... sooooo I guess I'm not that anal after all

I ordered from Bike Bandit Fri.... It's due to arrive on Monday.
Maybe I'll go over to TopCat's house and mount and balance it and see how he's doing on getting Godzilla's brakes working again.

                        Tires

I have been using dual compound Bridestone SP11's for 5 years now. They are very good in the rain and work excellent for my high speed commute (54m round) every day in any weather. These tires run $52 to $87 depending the size used. Dennis Kirk consistently sells these tires cheaper than anyone I've found, and free shipping over $100.
I'm getting 10-12000 out of the fronts and 6500 from the rear, riding the p___ out them. Much max takeoff and hard stopping(sometimes necessitated by slow traffic.)
I change the rear when I see some cord, and the front when it feels ready.

10-12k out of a FRONT? And the back is showing chord at 6500? Sounds more like a story of which tires NOT to buy to me.. Sounds like a tire most would change at 4-5k miles.

And just FYI... Motorcycle Superstore will match anyone's prices out there and their shipping is gonna spoil me. I ordered some tires last Tues, and they were here Thurs. Been like that the last at least half dozen times I've ordered. I can get a ride planned during the week, decide I don't have the rubber on the bike to do it, then get it ordered, here, and on the bike before I go. Plus, they give you a litle booklet with specials on it, and a code for 5% off your next order.

Well, they weren't wrong really... over 120 tornadoes reported in Oklahoma alone. Luckily, they just didn't hit you or me. Today looks like much the same, and my son wants to go dirtbike riding.. lol. I think it will be more mudbike riding, but we'll see.

The free shipping if for orders over $89. I only bought one tire, not 2, so I didn't spend that much, but next time ...
Tires there were only a buck or 2 more than Bandit, but If I can get the 5% code, well then that'll be worth it right there.

Over the past 5 years I have spent thousands of $'s with motorcycle-superstore.com The longest I've ever had to wait for something was 5 day's. for the most part what I order comes out of one of their DC's which is about 300 miles south of me. So 2 to 3 days is normal. they're customer service is GREAT!

I quit buying tires from them for 1 reason thou... My local shop started matching their prices within 10%. for an extra 10 or 20 bucks I'll support my local guy. plus he gives me a discount on mount and balance if I buy them from him and if I pay in cash he covers the sales tax.... My kinda guy
