I quit using the Bridgestone splitfires because the harder compound around the center does not grip wet pavement good enough. Also, they crack around the sidewalls which makes me nervous.

new tire arrived, but I've got a problem!

Okay so I go to pull the wheel off today and I can't get the axle out! It'll twist around but it's hung up somewhere between the wheel bearing and the caliper bracket. I even tried pounding on the other side (where the spindle nut is) using a 3lb sledge!
I'm totally stumped. There's got to be something wrong with how I put it together a year ago.

There really isn't anything for it to hang on in there. All I can think of is the bearing has gone bad and welded the inner race to the axle.

One way or the other it has to come off there. Keep working it.

could have rusted to the bearing.

Going to have to just keep beating it.

Yeah, if you go back in the thread you'll see where he can turn it but it wont slide out.

That was my first thought too, he might be pulling a Brent.

I can get it to move about a 1/4" and no more. I'm all out of ideas. The only thing I can think to possibly do now, is to pull the swing arm apart.
If I hammer away at the left side all I'm doing is messing up the axle bolt and the alignment. If i get the whole swing arm off the bike then I can pull the final drive off and have better access to the axle.

                    Well, no.
You will still have to remove the axle before you can remove the final drive.
But you will be able to put the offending axle in a press, and not screw up the threads. Good luck, CZ

I wouldn't worry too much about the axle at this point. More than likely it's already FUBAR. Be careful with the wheel.

Lots of axles out there. I've got a few.

                        Got it off!

So after beating the hell out of it it finally came out.
I might have messed up the threads and the nut is definitely fubar.
After cleaning up the shaft it slides in and out just fine. Just dirt and a little rust.

Well, George is probably home getting some rest, he was able to come by with the wheel/tire and the fairing bracket, got the tired changed in about 15 minutes, static balanced it on a pair of jackstands with the axle. Then we welded up his fairing bracket. We'll be getting together on the bikes tomorrow and meeting up with Nightengale and possibly also drop over to see KeithH on the way back.
