What is everyone doing for insurance on these bikes. I made some calls today because I wanted to insure for more than blue book value. The prices I received were ridiculous. One was $1700 for each bike and the other was $2700 for each. These I find outrageous but were for full coverage, collison, theft, PL and PD. What I really found puzzling was that hardly anyone was willing to provide coverage for a bike over 12 years old much less one 30 years.

oh my God,if I had to pay that much for insurance,it would sit in the garage. I pay,$78.00 for the year ,and that's full coverage. But,don't know about Canada, but in N.Y.,I can only insure it for what the book says it's worth, which is like $1700. If it was a collector item, you can insure it for what it's worth, unfortunely, the SG is not in that category. The reason they won't let you do that here is because of insurance fraud. hell you could insure it for let's say, a cool million, and throw it off a cliff.

man thats totally rediculous! i have an 81sh in great condition and looks pretty close to urs, but i put liability only on it, cause even tho its worth much more to me personally, and not in $, its probably worth around $2000, so why put all that coverage on it for that kind of $. i went thru Progressive and i pay $75 for total yr coverage all season. some coverage is only for 6 mos with a lay up period in Nov-Apr. i pay the same on my 94 CBR1000F. ive done all the work on both bikes, so i dont need ins to pay for it if i do some damage. what is the value of ur bikes?

I go through progressive to,you shoud check out collision, remember, there only gonna give you what it's worth so collision is cheap.I figure,at least im gonna get parts money, and can buy the bike off the insurance company. also depends on your age,i'm 54,in insurance terms,an ole fart.

I have Progressive also, and for full coverage including agreed-upon value with enough to cover my gear too, roadside assistance and towing, I pay just over $100/year. My driving record isn't the cleanest in the world, either (but it's not that bad).

I want to say I got a few bucks discount for the alarm I have on it, but I don't know how much (or remember my password to their site ).

                54

yeah, well im 54 also and luckily have a clean driving record. im def gonna call them tomorrow and check. i waited till my record was 3yrs clean to make sure i could get the best price. b4 that i was paying $160 with Country Company Ins. and they didnt do an anual record ck, so i thought i was doin good w/Progrssive. i never even asked a price for full coverage.
good thread cause i never even thought how much everyone was payin.
i dont know where Mack went tho?

Mack. I pay 135 bucks a year here in Alberta for simple PL and PD. The prices I was quoted for full insurance was so much I could literally pay for any of my bikes every 2 years. I have been thinking there must be a place like Grundy that will insure me for cheaper. I mean with more than a few bikes and only one rider, I should be able to insure for cheaper. I do not know if Grundy has coverage in Canada but I think I saw an ad stating that they can. The only other option I have here is to insure for appraised value which costs even more.
Maybe a search for what collector car owners do in you area will be informative. Might be some hoops to jump through but hey if it can save you a bundle it may be worth a try.

Mack, you might want to check with some of the 'collector car' insurance companies. A couple of them (I forget which) are starting to go into 'classic' bikes but I don't recall the details. Being in Canada, your options may be more limited, but it's worth a look....

Not sure how things work in Canada, but I know my Cutlass can have full coverage for $20k for about $500 a year. As is, I have liability only for $120 a year on it. I never looked into the bike, only cary liability and its about $80 a year.

I'm with Progressive but this is my second bike which gave me a multi bike discount. I stated it was worth 2500 and that's what Progressive recorded. I'm carrying full coverage, adding this bike cost me an additional 35.00/year but I gained the multiline discount. My other bike is a 2008 Honda VTX 1800 and was 400/year by itself. My last bike was a 93 Shadow 1100 and was 200/year by itself and was cheaper at Progressive than anywhere else
