My SG has run Sporty muffs for 5 years now. Tone is a little deeper than stock, about the same db. No crossover, no problem. I had a muffler shop make up a reducer to fit the 1.75 dia. of the mufflers. He welded on a tab to fasten to the stock muffler mounting bolt. Tight set up. Something a little longer would probably look better, but these were brand new, inexpensive eBay item.

You cant see in my pic but the backside of my mufflers have a threaded boss weldd in and I made simple steel brackets going from the XS650 muffler mount to those bosses. You must get a pair of mufflers that are symetrical!! Search craigslist in your area for "Harley pipes, Harley exhaust, Harley mufflers" ect. The mufflers in the pic going on my XS650 do not have converters in them. I have a brand spanking new set I bought from ebay in addition to the ones pictured. I was dissappointed to find those ones have catalytic converters in them. I may still try them out on my XS1100.

I put JCW "extra long" on my G. Did lose the cross over but it did NOT take any welding (my header pipes were in real good shape). Pretty close to the OEM look and I did have to rejet or adjust the carbs. Did not notice any performance loss and the sound was decent. JCW makes some shorter ones that should work fine on a Special. I did have to "tweak" the rear stock mounting some but all in all it was a pretty simple, bolt on , bend that install. Again, I did not have to do any welding. The Dunstall type are repackable and the ones I got are not. I have had them on for over 8 years and they are starting to show some age(chrome dosen't shine like it used to but no rust thru) but at less than $50 each (at the time), it was a good swap which netted a decent OEM look. Personally, I do not like the look of the HD mufflers on a 11 and the JCW mufflers were a great compromise to a Mac or a Kerker (if you can find one). Oil filter access is same as OEM.
            When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

Just go to a Harley shop to get the muffs. Harley dudes want loud aftermarket pipes and they just toss the stockers in a bin. They will generally let them go cheap.

If you have a special ( I don't recall) I can sell you a brand new pair of EMGO dunstall style mufflers for $125.00 including shipping. They have a slant upward after the connection, like a special. same lenght as special.
The JCW shown above is too short. EMGO is JCW s supplier.

If you are on a tight/no budget the Harley mufflers are cheap enough to just buy and try. For $40 you should be able to get a SPOTLESS show quality pair. Blemished pairs go for around $10-$20. I have a brand new pair that have the catalytic converters in them but none the less I am gonna try them out on my XS1100.

I had a set of Harley muffs off a Road Glide, with cats. PO had knocked the cat out of one. It is possible to remove those if it turns out they give you problems. Some Sportster muffs became available that required no alteration, so I used those. Have no idea how the bigger ones would have sounded, but it should be pretty good if the baffles are intact.
