ok, i was thinking of getting new mufflers for my xs. the OEM ones are working, but look like crap. i understand there will be a slight performance loss, but i want my bike to look clean on a budget. i found some mufflers that should fit, but i was wondering what methods others used to get the old ones off.

Buuuuuut before you take a hacksaw to perfectly good exhaust system you may want to offer it up for sale, original headers without mufflers are plentiful and probably cheap. Someone may looking for good original exhausts and may do you a financially in your favour deal.

Due to the rarity a lot of people here are willing to put the money into rechroming a good set of pipes. I agree, sell them and get yourself some head pipes and collectors to weld muffler onto.
Depending on your budget, I think performance coatings will do their chromex coating for around $200 on the stock pipes. Looks pretty good IMO and is probably what I will do someday.Nathan

I bought a couple of these for my Special. You do lose the crossover pipe with them.

It wasn't just a bolt-on deal with an XS exhaust which has the mufflers welded on. I had to weld on an extension to the collectors to have something for the mufflers to slip over. If you can find a set of XJ headers, they have slip on mufflers already, so it would be a lot easier deal.
As for the mufflers, they were about as close to stock look as I could find. Buy a decent packing material for the baffle. They have a little bit on them when you get them, but when I started them up the first time, fiberglass would shoot out with every throttle blip, then they became EXTREMELY loud and obnoxious. I got some good quality packing and wrapped up the baffle completely, and now I love the sound of them. Yeah, his dirt bike is about that loud also. Seems to like the throttle on it a lot also. I don't know who he gets that from...Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

I am reassembling an XS650 that will use mufflers from a Harley Davidson. Im sure you know the first thing Harley owners do is replace their exhaust. The oem Harley mufflers are great quality and are CHEAP!!!!!!! I will not know how they work for a couple months yet. For $20 I got 2 mufflers with clamps that could pass of as new. The metal is super heavy gauge and the chrome is show quality. Here is my XS650 exhaust with Harley mufflers. I have chrome shields that will cover the stamped in Harley info.

HD mufflers are on ebay all the time. You'll find lot's of cheap ones. As stated above HD riders change over to loud pipes right away. most Ebay offers are like new.
You can find sporster & dyna mufflers with mounting brackets welded in place that are easy to adapt to the xs1100.
soft tail mufflers are like dyna, but most have openings for crossover. Uou could use these with flex pipe crossover.
But shop carefully, some muffler pairs have mounts for same side, or forward/rear mounting on HDs.
I put a pair of HD fishtails on my 80 SG last year. I cut off the mounting piece & used 3 inch circular chrome brackets. Also anHD item.Tom Clisham

One thing you have to be careful of with HD mufflers now is some have catalytic convertors in one of the pair. I pretty sure this started with the EFI bikes, and these are marked as such so you need to ask. I suspect you would foul the convertor fairly quickly on a carburated bike...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
